Metal recycling is part of a larger cycle that helps reduce waste and supports manufacturing nationwide. It’s a good habit, and a smart way to earn something back for things you no longer need.

If the garage, basement, or shed needs a reset before school starts, now’s a good time to scrap what you’re no longer using. Old bikes, shelving, broken tools, metal furniture—if it’s metal, we’ll take a look!

Start the school year with a little more space (and a little extra cash in your pocket).

This is because non-ferrous metals do not contain iron. Rust is a specific type of corrosion that only happens when iron reacts with oxygen and water.

Not sure what kind of metal you’ve got? Start with a magnet.

If it sticks, it’s ferrous (like steel or iron); if it doesn’t, it’s non-ferrous - an easy way to check and separate your metals before you bring them in!

Renovation season is in full swing, and if you're tearing anything out this summer, pay attention to what's going in the dumpster.

A lot of valuable scrap gets thrown away during demo jobs because people don't realize its value. Here's what to pull out before the dumpster fills up:
- Aluminum window and door frames
- Copper plumbing pipe and fittings
- Electrical wire and breaker boxes
- Steel structural supports, beams, and hardware
- Old baseboard heaters and radiators
- Steel door frames and hinges
- Old HVAC components
- Stainless steel sinks and appliances

Contractors: we work with demo and construction crews regularly and can handle large loads. Call ahead for large commercial volumes and we'll make sure your drop-off goes smoothly.

Copper is one of the most valuable metals you can bring to the yard — and your home probably has more of it than you think.

Here's where copper hides:
- Electrical wiring — especially in older homes (pre-1970s often used thicker gauge)
- Plumbing pipe — especially in older construction before PVC became standard
- Radiators and baseboard heating systems
- Extension cords and appliance cords (insulated copper wire)
- Old electronics — TVs, computers, and appliances contain copper components
- AC unit coils — copper refrigerant lines are valuable
- Fittings, valves, and shut-off valves

If you’re renovating your home and gutting a bathroom, kitchen, or basement, don't throw that copper in the dumpster — bring it to Alter!
