St. Monday, Henry Ford, and the Post-Pandemic Office
My 20- something kids often lament “adulting.” It usually involves how much everything costs.
Once, the conversation veered to who “invented” (was to blame for) the 5-day work week.
Prior to the industrial revolution there was a 6-day work week with only Sunday off, (for church.) Enter “keeping Saint Monday.”
Saint Monday was a term for the practice among workers to skip work on Monday because of partying on Sunday. Some historians believe that “keeping Saint Monday” was an opportunity for the workers to display their independence.
Factory owners hated this absenteeism as it decreased productivity. Eventually, owners shut down on Saturday afternoons, ending skip day. Productivity increased. Happier employees. More profit. Win-win.
In 1926, Henry Ford established the 2-day weekend, to retain employees. Less turnover. Happier employees. More profit. Win-win.
Weekends were a game-changer for work. Not much has happened for work since.
Research proves that the workplace has an impact on employee engagement and satisfaction.
What are you doing today that will make employees want to come to work?
It's not the same for all.
We have an opportunity to re-imagine the workplace.
