With saddened but grateful hearts we announce the passing of my father David Bowles to his heavenly home. His family will continue to keep his books The Westward Sagas and dabowpay going. Please join us for his services October 4th in the Dallas area. There will be a Celebration of Life in November or December in San Antonio, date and location to be announced soon.

David Alton Bowles, a proud fifth-generation Texan, passed away peacefully on September 21, 2024, at the age of 80, after a sudden battle with pancreatic cancer. He was surrounded by his loving family at T. Boone Pickens Hospice in Dallas, Texas. Born on November 24, 1943, David spent much of his life in Dallas, San Antonio and Austin, where he built a legacy through three beloved careers. He started out as a young man in the US Navy. After returning home worked in liquor sales with Lone Star and W.A. Taylor before founding Check Technologies, which evolved into Dabow Inc., a merchant services company now led by his daughter, Sherri.
David’s passion for his family history and storytelling later inspired him to become an author and publisher, chronicling the journeys of his ancestors in the "Westward Sagas," a five-book series that reflects his deep love for Texas, his country and its rich heritage. A dedicated member of various organizations that preserve history and professional organizations, David was involved with the Sons of the American Revolution, Sons of the Republic of Texas, and the Texas State Historical Association, among others. He also served on President Clinton's Small Business Advisory Council, showcasing his commitment to community and service.
David is survived by his brother Mitch Hovden and wife Elaine of Lubbock; his daughter Sherri Williams and her husband John of Celina, TX; son Douglas Bowles of San Antonio, TX; daughter Lisa Seaton and her husband Nolan of Lubbock, TX. David Murphy and Wife Miesa of Meridian, ID. He was a proud grandfather to Joshua Bowles, Nicholas Williams, Ashleigh Williams, Michael Williams and wife Charissa, Laura Fi**en, Alissa Seaton, Justin Seaton and wife Chasitie, Sophia Murphy, and Eli Murphy and a cherished great-grandfather. David was also a beloved uncle. David was often seen with his faithful companion, his loyal yellow Labrador, Becka. He was preceded in death by his father Malcolm Bowles and wife Ida, Mother Alta Hovden and husband Chuck, brother Roger Bowles and wife Sandra, niece Carla Bowles. David leaves behind a legacy of love, storytelling, and dedication to Texas history.
The family will hold a viewing Friday, October 4th from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at Restland Funeral Home, 13005 Greenville Avenue, Dallas, TX 75243, followed by a private burial. A public memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday at Prosper United Methodist Church, 1801 Lanier Way, Prosper, TX 75078. The Service will be live streamed from Prosper UMC’s website: https://prosperumc.org/livestream. A Celebration of Life Reception will also take place in November or early December in San Antonio, with details to be announced.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the 100 Club of San Antonio, Prosper United Methodist Church, Tunnel to Towers Foundation, or the American Cancer Society. David’s spirit and stories will forever be cherished by all who knew him.
