“Legislative Dems follow highway robbery with blackmail.”

A new guest column takes a sharper stance on HB26-1430, arguing the bill would effectively cancel out Initiative 175—even if voters approve it—by cutting gas taxes and vehicle fees by the same amount raised for roads.

The concern: voters could approve funding for transportation, only to see that funding offset—leaving roads unfixed and raising questions about TABOR refunds and budget priorities.

With Colorado roads ranking near the bottom nationally and costs for drivers continuing to climb, the debate is intensifying over who decides where transportation dollars go: lawmakers or voters.

The issue is gaining momentum as the legislative session winds down.

State lawmakers have introduced HB26-1430, a bill targeting Initiative 175—a citizen-led effort to dedicate existing fuel and vehicle-related taxes to fixing Colorado’s roads.

If voters approve Initiative 175, HB26-1430 would reduce gas taxes and vehicle fees by the same amount—effectively canceling out new funding for road repairs.

Supporters say this move undermines voters’ ability to decide how transportation dollars are spent and keeps the current system in place.
