National Volunteer Week Spotlight: Matt

Did we save the best for last? No. We saved all of our chiefs, including Matt, for last because that’s what great leaders do. They step back, put their team first, and make sure others are recognized before themselves.

Matt has proudly served the Center Point Fire Department since 2017. Before joining the CPFD family, Matt was working a job where part of his duties included industrial firefighting. That introduction in to the world of firefighting, partnered with his passion for service to others is what inspired him to persue the amazing opportunities the CPFD provides. Starting out as a firefighter, he has served in all positions, and as of last year, he stepped in as chief of the Center Point Fire Department. He maintains a team that will quite literally follow him through fire. Matt exemplifies what it means to lead from within. He is often found right alongside his incredible team during trainings, emergency calls, and community events, working in the thick of it with them every step of the way. Along with his service to the men and women on his department and the community of Center Point, he also operates as an AEMT on the Center Point Ambulance Service. Because of his involment on both services, you are likely to meet him, or really any of our members on one of the worst days of your life. While they serve with dedication and professionalism, you don't have to have an emergency to meet Matt or any of the amazing people he serves along side. Our firefighters train every Wednesday night, generally starting at 7pm. Stop in, meet the folks that serve your community, learn something new, and consider joining the CPFD family. Volunteer first responders are truly a breed of their own. They work full time jobs, sometimes have multiple jobs, run businesses, continue their education, manage their home and family time, and still volunteer to get dressed and run out the door anytime the pager goes off.

National Volunteer Week Spotlight: Dave

Dave has served with the Center Point Fire Department since 2002. Over the years, he has taken on nearly every role within the department, including his current position as assistant chief. If you’re looking for someone who is “fully involved,” Dave is your guy.
In addition to his years of service and broad experience, he consistently goes above and beyond to foster a deeper passion for the fire service. He has even passed that passion down to his two sons, Dalton and Mac, who now proudly serve alongside him. Most local firefighters meet Dave early in their careers while taking their Firefighter I class at Kirkwood, where he serves as an instructor and helps lay the foundation for their training. He is a skilled and dedicated educator who takes great pride in shaping the next generation of firefighters.
His commitment to continued learning makes him a tremendous asset to the CPFD. He regularly attends classes and conferences across the country, connecting with departments that operate differently from our own. He brings those insights, ideas, and perspectives back with him, helping to strengthen our department and keep us moving forward.

Time to hear from the man himself!

"I didn’t know anything about firefighting—didn’t even realize it was a job, let alone the greatest one out there. A good friend/coworker, who is a firefighter, told me I should join because it was fun and exciting. He wasn’t wrong—but it’s so much more than that.
The adrenaline still kicks in when the tones drop, but what’s stayed with me even more are the relationships. The friendships I’ve built along the way are impossible to measure. I’ve been fortunate to learn from firefighters who taught me things I didn’t even know I needed to learn."

Thank you Dave!

National Volunteer Week Spotlight: Chris S.

Chris has been with us on the CPFD since 2021, but his commitment to the fire service spans an impressive 30 years across both paid and volunteer departments. Throughout his career, he has served with dedication and leadership in multiple roles, including firefighter, captain, and currently assistant chief. His passion for the job was inspired early on by his father, who served as a firefighter for over 20 years, and by a genuine desire to help others in their time of need. That foundation has shaped Chris into the leader and teammate we know today. His knowledge and experience continue to make a lasting impact on our department.

Chris was asked to share some advice. This is what he had to say!

"Listen to the old timers and learn everything you can. It will make you a better firefighter, and a better person."

Thank you Chris!

Richard, more commonly known as Taco, started with the CPFD in 2020. Since then, he has proven himself as someone who doesn’t back down from a challenge. Whether balancing work, family life, or responding to calls, he always finds a way.
Richard is not only a member of the CPFD, but also serves with the Center Point Ambulance Service, ready to step up when his community needs him most. As a volunteer firefighter, he shows a strong commitment to learning and growth by seeking out training opportunities to learn new and different perspectives.

National Volunteer Week Spotlight: Rozy

Brent, better known as Rozy by most, celebrated 20 years with the department late last year! Rozy's passion and tenacity for the fire service is truly admirable. No matter how big or small, he is ready to face any challenge or task head on. Along with serving the community of Center Point, he is also an active member with the Iowa Firefighters Association Honor Guard. We are deeply grateful for his years of dedicated service and the steady commitment he has shown. We look forward to many more years with Rozy as a valued member of our team.

Here are a few words from Rozy!

"I was born and raised in Niagara Falls, NY. I grew up with family and friends on fire departments in western New York and always wanted to participate in some way. At 14, I got to assist a local, now defunct, volunteer fire department - put equipment on their new ladder truck and helped with/took part in parades.

On 9/11, when I was 16, I was ironically visiting family in Iowa. I remember watching all the events unfold on TV, feeling so useless and wanting to help. I decided that I wanted to be a firefighter at that moment.

That dream didn't come true until 2005, after I moved from New York to Iowa. I joined in late 2005 to serve my community, learn and take in as much firefighting knowledge as I could. I wanted to represent my community to the best of my ability, to be a role model to kids, and one day, possibly my own.

Today, 20 years later, I am proud of the knowledge and experience I've gained over time. I plan to continue to serve my community, continue to be a role model to younger generations including my daughters, 2 and 9, and pass the knowledge and tradition down to them."

Thank you Rozy for all that you do!

National Volunteer Week Spotlight: Jacob

Jacob began his journey with us as an explorer some time ago and returned to join the Center Point Fire Department as a firefighter in 2022. In that time, he has grown as a firefighter and has been hard at work building the best life possible for his young family. Balancing work, life, and the commitment to serve isn’t easy. The time and energy he puts into both his family and his community is truly something to be appreciated. Though he has expressed that he may not always be around the department as often as he would like, his efforts don’t go unnoticed. He continues to do what he can, when he can, and that’s what makes the difference.

When asked what his favorite thing about firefighting was, Jacob kept it simple: “It’s got to be giving back to the community and the brotherhood it creates.”

Thank you Jacob!

Last night’s training with CPFD firefighters focused on vehicle extrication. This type of training is critical for our firefighters due to the eight miles of interstate running through our area, along with local traffic and the wide variety of vehicles traveling these routes.
Thank you Darrah’s Towing & Recovery for providing the cars for our training.

National Volunteer Week Spotlight: Dylan

Dylan is a third-generation firefighter who has been surrounded by the fire service his entire life. However, like every firefighter, the decision to serve has to come from within — and its a decision we are very glad he made. He began his journey as an explorer in 2019, later became a firefighter, and now serves as a captain. Before stepping into this role, he distinguished himself as a leader among his peers through his hard work and dedication to the fire service. Dylan is a prime example of how leadership and continuous growth go hand in hand.

When asked why he started firefighting, this is what he said!

"I started fire fighting just to see how it was and what it was all about at first, and ever since my first call it’s been about training with the guys to be the best firefighter I can be when it’s time to do the job."

Thank you Dylan!
