Mike Peditto| HR & Tech Leader | Chicago Nobody gets fired on day 2 for fun. Companies hire people hoping it will work. But it also is very clear when a lack of accountability is going to be a problem at work and we have to stop just saying it’s not that serious.

I’m sorry this person got fired, but despite them saying they didn’t realize the time policy was so rigid, I don’t think it’s a matter of 5 minutes that got them fired. And that is why job interviews ask the stuff they ask about.

You have to take accountability and own mistakes at work and people who say I’m not making excuses while making excuses are very often not going to break that pattern.

History Cool Kids This photo was taken at the Second Automatic Vending Exhibition in London in February 1960.

The machine, made by Rollason Aerocessaries of Croydon, dispensed a full measure of whisky and automatically mixed it with water or soda for 2 shillings and sixpence—about 35¢ in 1960 U.S. dollars, or roughly $5 today. It even had a timer that locked the machine outside permitted licensing hours.

The exhibition was essentially a showcase of the automated future. Alongside the whisky machine were dispensers for gin and tonic, rum toddies, soup, milk, baked goods, chocolate, pens, towels, combs and razors.

Ironically, the machine that reportedly attracted the most interest wasn't the whisky dispenser. It was one that made tea.
