"Before you are a leader, success is all about growing yourself. When you become a leader, success is all about growing others." — Jack Welch

Shifting Focus in Hospitality Leadership

13th in the series

In the hospitality industry, personal growth is often the first step toward leadership. However, as Jack Welch’s quote highlights, the true measure of leadership lies in the ability to nurture and develop others. Whether you’re a restaurant manager mentoring new servers or a hotel director guiding department heads, the focus shifts from individual achievements to empowering your team to succeed.

Hospitality leaders can embrace this philosophy by investing in their team’s development. A hotel manager might implement a mentorship program where experienced staff train new hires, fostering a culture of learning and collaboration. A restaurant general manager could provide opportunities for employees to attend workshops or gain certifications in areas like wine pairing or customer service. By prioritizing the growth of their team, leaders enhance individual skills and strengthen the overall performance of the organization.

When leaders focus on developing others, the benefits are far-reaching. Employees who feel supported in their professional development are more likely to stay with the organization, reducing turnover and associated costs. Additionally, a well-trained and motivated team delivers higher-quality service, leading to improved guest satisfaction and loyalty. Over time, this approach builds a reputation for excellence, attracting both top talent and discerning guests to your establishment.
