It’s been a busy stretch with cyber assessments and military work, so I haven’t posted much. I’m going to try sharing weekly cybersecurity tips to help small businesses and everyday users stay safe online.

Recently, a massive online leak exposed over 183 million stolen email passwords collected from years of malware infections, phishing scams, and old data breaches. Cybersecurity experts say this is one of the largest collections of stolen credentials ever discovered.

A simple way to check if your password has been compromised is by visiting haveibeenpwned.com
If your password has been exposed, change it immediately. It’s also a good idea to enable multi-factor authentication to add an extra layer of protection to your accounts.

Are You a Small Business That Handles PII? Do You Know the Consequences of Losing It?

If your business collects, stores, or processes Personal Identifiable Information (PII)—such as customer names, addresses, Social Security numbers, or payment details—you could be at serious risk if that information falls into the wrong hands. A data breach can lead to financial penalties, legal actions, reputational damage, and loss of customer trust.

The Federal Trade Commission has a simple yet effective guide to help businesses understand how to properly protect personal information and avoid costly breaches.

Some of you may be wondering why I am volunteering my services. Well, in order to maintain my CISSP certification and remain in good standing with ISC2, I must complete 120 hours of Continuing Professional Education over a three-year period. These CPEs ensure that I stay up to date with evolving cybersecurity trends, best practices, and industry developments.

One of the options available for earning CPE credits is through volunteer work, which not only helps me fulfill my certification requirements but also allows me to give back to my community. I believe that small businesses are the backbone of our economy, and many of them lack the resources or cybersecurity expertise needed to protect themselves from potential cyber threats.

By offering my knowledge and skills, I can help small business owners navigate cybersecurity challenges, answer their questions, and provide guidance on best practices for safeguarding their digital assets. Whether it’s raising awareness about phishing scams, data protection, or compliance regulations, I see this as an opportunity to make a real impact while continuing my professional growth.

Cybersecurity is not just about protecting large corporations—it’s about securing our communities, protecting livelihoods, and ensuring that everyone has access to the knowledge they need to stay safe online. By volunteering, I can bridge the gap for those who may not have access to cybersecurity resources, while also upholding the high standards set by ISC2.

If you have any questions about the CISSP certification, one of the world’s premier cybersecurity certifications, check out the official ISC2 CISSP page here:

The CISSP is the world’s premier certification for security practitioners, managers and executives to demonstrate their expertise across a wide array of cybersecurity practices.

Many small businesses assume that buying another security tool is the answer—but as this (ISC)² article explains, a strong cybersecurity posture starts with strategy, awareness, and best practices before technology.

Volunteering to Strengthen Small Business Cyber Resilience
I am dedicating my time and expertise to volunteer my cybersecurity services to assist small businesses in Chambersburg, PA, in becoming more cyber-aware and resilient against evolving threats. Cybersecurity shouldn’t be a privilege limited to large corporations—it’s a necessity for businesses of all sizes. My mission is to empower local businesses with the knowledge, tools, and strategies they need to protect their operations without the burden of high costs.

Why Small Businesses?
Small businesses are increasingly becoming prime targets for cybercriminals. Small businesses are prime targets for cybercriminals due to their limited resources for robust cybersecurity measures, making them easier to infiltrate. In 2023, nearly 43% of all cyberattacks were directed at smaller businesses, underscoring their vulnerability, according to Mastercard Insights. Unlike large corporations with extensive cybersecurity budgets, small businesses may lack the resources or expertise to:
✔️ Identify and prioritize their most sensitive data
✔️ Understand key cyber terrain and vulnerabilities
✔️ Defend against industry-specific cyber threats

This is where I step in—as a volunteer, I want to bridge this gap by offering free assessments, awareness training, and practical solutions tailored to small businesses.

My Experience & Expertise
I currently work for the DoD, conducting cyber assessments to identify vulnerabilities, mitigate risks, and strengthen the security posture of critical systems. My experience has given me deep insights into threat actor tactics, cybersecurity best practices, and effective defense strategies—all of which I am now bringing to the small business community in Chambersburg, PA through my volunteer work.

I also hold several industry-recognized cybersecurity certifications, including:

(ISC)² CISSP – Pending Endorsement Verification
CompTIA SecurityX
GIAC Global Industrial Cyber Security Professional (GICSP)
K>FiveFour Red Team Apprentice Course

Cyber Assessments for Small Businesses:
As part of my volunteer efforts, I offer cyber assessments to help small businesses:
✔️ Identify and protect sensitive data
✔️ Recognize and defend against common cyber threats (e.g., phishing, ransomware)
✔️ Evaluate existing security policies and controls
✔️ Enhance overall cybersecurity hygiene with cost-effective solutions

These assessments are 100% tailored to the business’s unique risks and industry, ensuring that even the smallest companies can build a strong cybersecurity foundation without breaking the bank.

Why Swamp Fox?
The name Swamp Fox is a tribute to Francis Marion, the legendary Revolutionary War figure known for his unconventional guerrilla warfare tactics, which helped turn the tide against British forces. His ability to outmaneuver, adapt, and strike against a superior enemy with limited resources is exactly how I approach cybersecurity—helping small businesses defend themselves against modern cyber threats using strategic, efficient, and cost-effective methods.

Additionally, Marion, PA, shares this historical connection, reinforcing the local significance of the name. Just as Francis Marion empowered his forces with intelligence and resilience, my mission is to equip small businesses with the knowledge and tools to anticipate, detect, and mitigate cyber risks before they become major threats.

Strengthening Chambersburg’s Cyber Resilience—Together:
Cyber threats aren’t going away—but that doesn’t mean small businesses have to be defenseless. Through my volunteer work, I aim to bridge the cybersecurity gap by providing:
✔️ Hands-on cyber assessments
✔️ Customized cybersecurity guidance
✔️ Actionable, budget-friendly security recommendations

If you’re a small business owner in Chambersburg, PA, looking for cybersecurity support, I’d love to help. Reach out to schedule a free consultation or cyber assessment. Together, we can build a more secure, resilient small business community in Chambersburg!
