A triaxle dump truck is a pretty big piece of equipment. Now picture trying to get one through this tunnel.

That was the challenge Superintendent Jeff Mays was working through during the bidding process for a recent project. The tunnel was part of the access route to the jobsite, so the team needed to confirm the truck would fit before they could plan the work around it.

A little homework before the job can save a lot of trouble once the equipment starts moving.

Today, we’re celebrating Glen Shatzer as he wraps up his time with DHM Excavating and heads into retirement!

Grant Benedict, V.P. of Operations, shared:

“It has been a privilege to be able to work with Glen over the past 13+ years. He’s affectionately referred to as ‘Pap’ Shatzer by many within DHM and I think that sums up his personality and demeanor extremely well. His presence, operating ability, and humor will be greatly missed on our jobsites as he moves towards a second career as a full-time fisherman!”

Congratulations on your retirement, Glen! Thank you for 13+ years with DHM. We’ll miss having you around, but we hope you enjoy plenty of time on the water in this next chapter! 🎣

DHM Crew Stories - Shawn Halteman, Lowboy Driver

When you talk to Shawn, it is easy to see that his family is important to him. Shawn and Kelsey are parents to three energetic kiddos—Judson (6), Adaleah (3), and Winston (1). They have a dog named Trigger and nine nameless chickens. Aside from wrangling their own children, Shawn and Kelsey are youth leaders at Blue Mountain BIC Church and are involved with the Shippensburg FFA Alumni.

Shawn was raised on his family’s farm, with one brother and four sisters. He says, “We were all homeschooled. My poor mother.”

Do you have a funny story from when you were young?

“Funny but not so funny, I almost set fire to our bank barn when I was 5 years old. I found a box of matches and was burning small piles of straw right after we got done unloading a couple wagons. I ended up setting the bank on fire leading up to the barn. Luckily the fire department showed up on time and put the fire out. Needless to say, I will never forget the talk that I had with the fire chief about how I should never play with matches. However, I do still enjoy a large campfire.”

If you were given a day off work to do whatever you wanted, what would it be?

“I love to be in the garden. Planting, mulching, watering, and harvesting. I find it very relaxing. I could also work on one of my many unfinished DIY projects at home.”
