In this clip, we’re loading directly from the side saddle using efficiency and momentum—not hunting for shells or wasting movement.

As the gun comes up, your hand moves with purpose. Use that rearward momentum to find the first shell on the side saddle. Don’t pluck at it—drive it into your fist so you have control immediately.

From there, roll your hand under the receiver, guiding the shell straight into the chamber. No extra motion, no hesitation. Once it’s seated, close the action hard and get the gun into a firing condition.

This isn’t a “nice to have” skill. This is what it looks like when you need to load the gun right now.

Done correctly, it’s fast, repeatable, and works under stress. Done poorly, it turns into fumbling, dropped shells, and wasted time you don’t have.

Build the habit:
– Use momentum, not speed for the sake of speed
– Drive the shell into your hand with intent
– Roll under the receiver clean and direct
– Close the action like it matters

Because it does.

If your defensive shotgun feels slow, clunky, or hard to control under recoil… there’s a good chance it’s not you—it’s your length of pull.

Shorter is better. Here’s why:

* Faster mount = faster first shot
A shorter stock lets you get the gun into your shoulder pocket quickly without hunting for position.
* Better recoil control
When the gun is pulled in tight, you can actually apply proper push/pull tension. That means faster, more accurate follow-up shots—even with 12 gauge.
* Improved mobility
Working around doorways, hallways, vehicles, or loved ones? A shorter setup keeps the gun from feeling like a 2x4 sticking out in front of you.
* Works with modern shooting posture
Aggressive, squared-up stances don’t play well with long stocks. Shorter length of pull keeps everything aligned and efficient.
* More forgiving under stress
You’re not always going to get a perfect mount in a real defensive encounter. A shorter stock gives you more room for error without sacrificing control.

For most shooters, that means ditching the factory stock or running a reduced length option (or adjustable system) that actually fits your body and your mission.

This isn’t about comfort—it’s about performance when it counts.

If you haven’t evaluated your shotgun’s fit, you’re leaving speed and control on the table.

Train with it. Pressure test it. Adjust accordingly.

If your shotgun is staged in cruiser ready (empty chamber, loaded magazine tube, action closed, safety on), the moment you decide to bring it into the fight is not the time to be sloppy. It’s the time to be deliberate.

Here’s the reality: the first round you load is the most important one.

This is where we see hesitation, fumbled grips, short-stroking, missing the charging handle, or breaking your mount entirely. All of that costs time—and more importantly—control.

Done right, loading that first round flows directly into your ability to make an accurate, accountable shot.

Done wrong, you’re behind before the fight even starts.

We spend time on this in our Defensive Shotgun classes because it’s one of those “simple” things that falls apart under pressure if you haven’t actually trained it.

Slow it down. Build the process. Then earn the speed.

A 12 gauge doesn’t have to be slow, punishing, or something you recover from between shots. When it’s set up and driven correctly, your follow-up shots can be shockingly close to handgun speed—and with a whole lot more authority on target.

The difference comes down to one concept: push-pull.

This creates constant tension through the gun. Instead of the shotgun recoiling into you and disrupting everything, you’re driving the gun through the recoil cycle.

Result?

Less muzzle rise
Faster sight return
Cleaner follow-up shots
More control under stress

Most shooters try to “absorb” recoil.

That’s the problem.

You don’t absorb a 12 gauge—you manage it.

Push-pull turns the shotgun from a hard-kicking tool into something you can run aggressively, predictably, and efficiently. It’s the difference between hoping the sights come back… and knowing exactly where they’re going to land.

This is why shotguns are still one of the most effective defensive tools available—if you know how to run them.

We’ll be dropping more clips from this class soon so you can see exactly what this looks like in real time.
