With corn harvest in full swing it’s wise to use these rain delays to check developing late beans. We are seeing the diamide chemistry’s wearing off after 21 days in certain situations. This is allowing the next generation of worms to re-infest and eat what growers are trying to sell.

Later planted soybeans typically compensate for planting date by growing larger leaves. However these younger beans are more susceptible to higher populations of corn earworms as moths lay eggs in the less developed beans. Be sure to use an appropriate product based on worm size to maximize yield!

Pretty disappointing weather this year in the river bottoms for growing corn. Constant wet weather tested our nitrogen use efficiency and rooting capabilities of hybrids. Proud to say that 429 double pro took first against several competitors planted in the area. We are your source for midland hybrids and varieties. Last 4 hybrids were cut off the plot by mistake.

Stripe rust is becoming more prevalent in SEK. Keep an eye out on susceptible and resistant varieties. It has mutated several times to overcome sources of resistance in current varieties.

With increased pyrethroid use it’s always nice to have a different mode of action. Have wanted to use this product for the last several years. Conditions were right this year with low populations and small worms. If you need a “bigger gun” an insecticide of the DMI class is your Cadillac treatment. These typically run 3 times higher than Heligen or a simple pyrethroid but give phenomenal Lepidoptera control. If running drilled beans run the numbers and see if aerial application is less costly. !
