The Full 5 Step Processđđź
First, breastfeeding to sleep isnât wrong.
But if it feels like youâre stuck in a never ending, unsustainable cycle, and no one is getting enough sleep, there are clear, safe ways to transition â when youâre ready.
If youâre ready to start shifting the nurse-to-sleep cycle:
1ď¸âŁ Nurse within 15 minutes of baby waking up
If you nurse again before a nap, do it 15 minutes before starting the nap routine, in a well-lit space.
2ď¸âŁ At bedtime, move the feed to the very beginning of the nighttime routine (well-lit).
3ď¸âŁ If baby starts to fall asleep while feeding, safely unlatch and gently wake them? hold them upright, let their feet dangle briefly, then relatch and finish the feed.
4ď¸âŁ Use a sleep training method to transition to independent sleep to replace nursing to sleep.
If the idea of Sleep Training leaves you feeling unsure, my free class âIs Sleep Training Right or Wrong for My Child?â walks through timing, readiness, and options so you can move forward with confidence or choose a different route.
5ď¸âŁ After night feeds (yes â you can continue breastfeeding overnight if you want to), always place your baby back in the crib AWAKE.
If your baby is under 3-4 months or youâre not ready yet, save this for later đ¤
