Historic Coburg Sign Unveils New Shrimp Statue, Honoring Charleston’s Seafood Heritage

Charleston, SC — A beloved local landmark is getting a coastal-inspired refresh. The historic Coburg sign, long known for featuring Bessie, the Coburg Cow, has officially unveiled its newest addition: a striking shrimp statue that celebrates the rich seafood traditions that make Charleston famous.

For decades, the Coburg sign has stood as a nostalgic symbol of the area’s past. Now, in a nod to Charleston’s vibrant culinary identity, Bessie has been retired and replaced with a larger-than-life shrimp—an homage to the Lowcountry’s world-renowned seafood.

“Charleston is synonymous with incredible seafood, and the shrimp felt like the perfect way to honor our bountiful waters,” said a representative involved in the update.

Shrimp has long been a staple of Charleston cuisine, featured in iconic dishes like shrimp and grits and fried shrimp baskets. The new statue aims to capture that spirit while preserving the charm and familiarity of the original sign.

While many may feel a sense of nostalgia for Bessie, the community is invited to embrace this new chapter. The updated Coburg sign is now on display and already drawing attention from locals and visitors alike.

-But y’all know Bessie is irreplaceable and this is only an April Fool prank. Bessie is safe and there are no plans to change a thing with our beloved Coburg Cow sign.
