A controversy unfolded on Facebook last week when a trampoline park posted that it was now an “official Hope Scholarship provider.” Parents across the political spectrum — including Hope Scholarship families — expressed outrage (not necessarily at the business, which I won’t name here), but at taxpayer dollars budgeted for education going to a trampoline park when they see so many needs in their schools and communities going unaddressed.

And it isn’t just trampoline parks: Approved Hope Scholarship vendors include 24-hour gyms, dance schools, providers of golf lessons, professional photographers and companies that sell virtual reality (VR) headsets. All while the public schools that serve 85% of our children statewide are losing art and music programs, eliminating bus routes and extracurricular activities, or closing their doors altogether as public school funding needs remain unaddressed while the Hope Scholarship’s costs skyrocket."

Governor Morrisey has vetoed Senate Bill 558.

SB 558 strengthens penalties for drivers who illegally pass a stopped school bus and creates a new aggravated offense for especially dangerous violations. It also allows school bus video footage showing a violation to be sent directly to law enforcement.

At the March WVSSPA Executive Committee meeting, President Talkington announced her retirement from Harrison County Schools. Our constitution requires officers to be regularly employed service personnel in West Virginia, so Sherri has stepped down from her unexpired State President position. During her announcement to the Executive Committee, Sherri said she would miss her WVSSPA Family and that it was very difficult for her, but she felt it was the right decision for her and her family. Join us in wishing Sherri a happy retirement! She has dedicated many years to WVSSPA, and her leadership will be missed.

The WVSSPA Executive Committee has appointed David Thompson to fill the remainder of Sherri’s term. David previously served as WVSSPA’s Vice President and is currently the Wayne County SSPA president. When accepting the appointment as WVSSPA President, David said he was honored to serve as WVSSPA’s President and has always advocated for better working conditions and quality of life for the working class. He also expressed his enthusiasm for working with all our members.
