Today on World AIDS Day, weโ€™re sharing a valuable resource for employers from the National Alliance.

The National Alliance recently conducted a four-part workshop series bringing together employers and HR leaders from across the country to learn how to strengthen benefit design, improve access to HIV prevention and treatment, and create more inclusive workplaces.

Their new guidebook highlights key takeaways, case studies, and practical steps organizations can use to support employees and help advance HIV awareness and prevention.

06/16/2025

๐Ÿ“Š Chronic conditions like hypertension, diabetes, and obesity are major drivers of preterm birth โ€” and theyโ€™re becoming more common among those giving birth.

In North Carolina, 10.8% of births were preterm in 2021. In some counties, high rates of chronic illness align with high preterm birth rates โ€” signaling a need for targeted action.

๐Ÿ”Ž Employers:
Ask your health plan if your benefits include a pre- and post-natal care program, especially for individuals managing chronic conditions. These programs can play a vital role in preventing complications and improving birth outcomes.

๐Ÿ“ฃ If a program exists:
-Is it being effectively promoted to those who need it most?
-Can the health plan proactively reach out to newly pregnant enrollees to raise awareness?
Could incentives encourage participation?

โœ… Early intervention and education can reduce preterm births, lower costs, and save lives. Letโ€™s ensure these resources are not just available โ€” but actually used.

๐Ÿ“‰ In North Carolina, over 17% of women receive inadequate prenatal care โ€” a rate higher than the national average.
This challenge is even more severe in communities of color, where systemic barriers like transportation, insurance coverage, and time off work make it harder to access care early and consistently.
Employers can help close this gap.

โœ… Ask your Employee Assistance Program (EAP) to identify and share community-based maternal health programs, particularly those that serve communities of color. These programs โ€” including doula services, mobile health units, and prenatal support groups โ€” can make a real difference in outcomes.

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ Elicit feedback from your employees on local programs theyโ€™ve found helpful โ€” and amplify that knowledge across your organization. Raising awareness could mean life-saving support for a coworker or their family.

๐Ÿšง Maternity care deserts aren't just statistics โ€” they represent real risks for families.

A county is considered a maternity care desert if it lacks both hospitals offering obstetric services and providers trained in prenatal and delivery care. These gaps lead to delayed or inconsistent prenatal care, contributing to preventable complications and maternal deaths.

As an employer or benefits leader, ask yourself:
๐ŸคฐDo you have employees or family members living in these areas?
๐Ÿ“If so, what is your health plan doing to ensure access to safe, quality maternity care โ€” including prenatal visits, delivery options, and postpartum support?
Now is the time to push for accountability and innovation:
โœ”๏ธ Is telehealth being leveraged to bridge access gaps?
โœ”๏ธ Are transportation or doula services part of your benefits strategy?
โœ”๏ธ Is the plan contracting with providers in or near underserved counties?

๐Ÿฅ Full access isnโ€™t just a public health goal โ€” itโ€™s a workforce health equity issue. Letโ€™s ensure that geography isnโ€™t a barrier to a safe and healthy pregnancy.
