THE CANE THEY SHOULD NEVER HAVE TOUCHED

Walter Hayes chose the corner booth for the same reason he always did.

From there, no one could see how much effort it took him to stand.

The diner sat on the edge of a quiet highway in northern Arizona. The coffee was average, the pie was too sweet, and the booths were older than most of the customers who walked through the door. Yet Walter had been coming here every year on the same day for nearly three decades.

The waitress already knew what he would order.

“Morning, Walter.”

He smiled.

“Morning, Emily.”

“The usual?”

“The usual.”

She poured fresh coffee into his mug and glanced at the wooden cane leaning against the booth.

Most people noticed the cane.

Very few noticed the silver motorcycle emblem carved into its handle.

Walter noticed it every time.

His fingers slowly traced the worn metal.

A memory immediately followed.

A younger voice.

A loud laugh.

A garage filled with sawdust.

"You keep buying cheap canes, Dad. One day I'll make you a real one."

Michael.

His son.

The only child he had ever had.

The only child he had ever lost.

Walter swallowed hard and stared out the window.

Thirty years.

Thirty years since the motorcycle accident.

Thirty years since the phone call that had shattered his life.

Yet some mornings it still felt as if it had happened yesterday.

Emily placed a plate of eggs and toast in front of him.

“You okay?”

Walter nodded.

“Just remembering.”

She understood.

Everyone in the diner knew why he came every year.

No one mentioned it.

No one wanted to reopen old wounds.

For a few peaceful minutes, Walter ate in silence.

Then the front doors burst open.

The laughter entered before the men did.

Six bikers stepped inside.

Heavy boots.

Black leather.

Tattooed arms.

Loud voices.

The atmosphere changed instantly.

Several customers lowered their eyes.

Others quietly looked away.

The man leading the group was younger than the others.

Broad shoulders.

Dark beard.

Arrogant smile.

The kind of man who enjoyed being the loudest person in every room.

His name was Travis Reed.

And he immediately noticed Walter.

More specifically...

He noticed the cane.

“Well,” Travis said loudly, nudging one of his friends. “Look at that.”

The group laughed.

Walter ignored them.

He had learned long ago that some people only became stronger when given attention.

Unfortunately, Travis wasn't interested in being ignored.

He walked directly to Walter's booth.

“Mind if I take a look?”

Before Walter could answer, Travis grabbed the cane.

The old man instantly straightened.

“Please.”

His voice was calm.

“Give that back.”

Travis twirled it in one hand.

“A little fancy for a walking stick.”

The others laughed.

Walter slowly rose from his seat.

Pain shot through his knee.

He tried not to show it.

“Please,” he repeated. “That belongs to my son.”

Something flickered across Travis's face.

Only for a moment.

Then he smirked again.

“Belonged.”

Walter froze.

The diner became silent.

“My son made it,” Walter said quietly.

“He died a long time ago.”

For one brief second, Travis almost looked ashamed.

Then one of the bikers behind him laughed.

The moment vanished.

“That's sad,” Travis said.

His elbow struck Walter's water glass.

It crashed onto the floor.

Water splashed across the old man's shoes.

Broken glass scattered beneath the table.

Several customers gasped.

Emily hurried forward.

“Hey! That's enough!”

Travis ignored her.

His eyes remained fixed on the silver emblem.

“A motorcycle logo?”

He laughed.

“Did your son actually ride?”

Walter's jaw tightened.

“Yes.”

“What was he? Some kind of biker hero?”

Nobody laughed this time.

Walter looked down.

The answer hurt too much.

Travis mistook the silence for weakness.

With a grin, he raised the cane above his shoulder.

And threw it.

The wooden cane slid across the diner floor.

Directly into the shattered glass.

The sound seemed impossibly loud.

Walter didn't move.

Didn't shout.

Didn't curse.

He simply stared at the cane lying among the broken pieces.

The entire diner waited for his reaction.

Instead, Walter slowly reached into his coat pocket.

Travis rolled his eyes.

“What now?”

Walter pulled out a small black device.

No bigger than a garage door remote.

The old man pressed a single button.

Then he spoke four quiet words.

“It's me. Bring them.”

The device clicked off.

Travis laughed.

“Calling your retirement home?”

Walter didn't answer.

He simply slipped the device back into his pocket.

Then he sat down.

And waited.

Thirty seconds passed.

Nothing happened.

A minute.

Still nothing.

The bikers laughed again.

Emily looked worried.

Even Walter's expression remained unreadable.

Then...

A low rumble echoed somewhere beyond the highway.

Barely audible.

Several customers frowned.

The sound grew louder.

And louder.

The coffee cups on the counter began to tremble.

A customer near the window turned his head.

His eyes widened.

“Uh...”

The room fell silent.

Outside, motorcycles were entering the parking lot.

Not one.

Not two.

Dozens.

And every single rider wore the exact same silver emblem carved into Walter's cane.

At the front of the formation rode a man whose face made Walter's heart stop.

Because for one impossible second...

He looked exactly like Michael.
