Juvenile Opossums are starting to split up from their mothers and try to make their own way in life. This one managed to find his way under a homeowner’s sink via the water line and got himself stuck. He was cooperative and let me remove him by hand in exchange for a cute portrait.

Our first melanistic squirrel! Not the most flattering photo but you wouldn’t sit still either if you were in a cage. Estimated to occur in about one in 10,000 Eastern Grey Squirrels, they are more frequently found here in the southeastern part of the U.S.

First bat of the year! Poor guy fell through a ton of cobwebs in an old chimney and had to be brushed off before he could take off again.

As we head into warmer evening temps this week you can expect to see them coming out of hibernation with an intense appetite for insects. They’ll also be scouting for new roosting areas to form mating colonies (which I suspect my friend here was doing) and start rearing pups in just a few months.

European Starlings are cavity nesters, and one of their favorite places to call home are the ductwork for your bathroom fans. Bird mites, odor, and a pile of kindling in the attic create lots of trouble for homeowners, but thankfully we were able to catch this one early.
