We want to thank all our members and new guests who joined us for our August chapter meeting last night! Here’s a rundown of what we covered:

• Baillie C. gave a presentation on The Oak of the Golden Dream. It was under this tree that the first documented gold discovery was made in California. The gold was found by Francisco Lopez in 1842 - six years before the discovery of gold at Sutter’s Mill.
• We discussed our next chapter outing which will be held at Thermal City over Labor Day weekend. This will be a joint outing between the Statesville, Catawba, and Kannapolis North Carolina GPAA Chapters and our chapter. You can RSVP online at www.augustagoldclub.com/outings
• We discussed the latest episode of Expedition Unknown which was filmed in our own backyard in Washington, Georgia. Josh and his team ended up finding an 1861 Mexico 8 Reales coin during his metal detecting hunt for the lost gold and silver coins of the Confederacy.

Be sure to watch Expedition Unknown tonight at 9:00pm on the Discovery Channel as Josh hunts for millions in missing Confederate gold in Washington, Georgia. Following a new lead, he explores a wagon train robbery site where gold and silver coins vanished. Then, an eyewitness account points to the location of Jefferson Davis's lost war chest. The episode will feature an appearance by former Augusta mayor Bob Young, legendary treasure hunter Troy McCormick, and a group of metal detectorists from middle Georgia called the Relic R.A.T. (Recovering Artifacts Together).

We have been working on finalizing all the information for our next chapter outing which will take place September 4-7, 2026 at Thermal City Gold & Gem Mine in North Carolina. This will be a joint outing between the Statesville, Catawba, and Kannapolis North Carolina GPAA Chapters and the Augusta, Georgia GPAA Chapter. It will be a great opportunity to prospect over the Labor Day holiday weekend and meet fellow GPAA/LDMA prospectors.

This gold nugget was part of more than 30 items on display at the American Aspirations exhibit at the Smithsonian Castle in Washington, DC. Why is this nugget so important? It is the first piece of gold discovered by James Marshall in 1848 at Sutter’s Mill in California and which would eventually launching the California gold rush! In order to determine that it was gold, Marshall hammered the nugget into its present shape to test its malleability.

The Perth Mint in Australia just set a Guinness World Record for the largest bar of gold ever created! Weighing in at 521.2 kilograms and valued at more than $67.8 million USD, the gold bar required approximately 1.5 tonnes of raw material to complete with over 35 specialists working on the project. 🇦🇺

The record was officially achieved on July 9, 2026.

We had a great chapter meeting this week! Thank you to everybody who came out and joined us on Thursday. Below is a recap of what was discussed:

• Baillie C. gave a presentation on gold mining and America 250. Discussions included Thomas Jefferson being the first person to document the discovery of gold in the US, the Smithsonian Castle showcasing the original nugget from Sutter’s Mill that started the California Gold Rush, Presidents and Vice Presidents who were connected to gold mining, and more.
• We discussed our next chapter outing which will be held at Thermal City in September. More information will be shared soon.
• Thanks to a generous donation from a member, we hosted a sale of prospecting gear (pans, classifiers, trash pumps, etc.) for nominal prices.
• Our raffle featured a selection of special America 250 5 gallon buckets.
