When our team is on-site, one of our goals is to help create open conversation within the practice.

Why? Because sometimes it’s easier to have an outside perspective help facilitate those discussions and create space for honest communication between the team.

Whether it’s a well-established practice or a brand-new startup, these conversations are important. But in the middle of busy schedules and day-to-day operations, they can easily get pushed to the bottom of the priority list.

Taking the time to pause, communicate openly, and understand different perspectives often leads to stronger collaboration and a more cohesive practice overall.

These are often the conversations behind thriving practices.

Recently, we have worked with a few doctors who just welcomed new babies into their families.

Around the same time, another doctor told us he was still spending his Sunday afternoons in QuickBooks handling administrative work for the practice.

Different situations, same theme: at some point, delegation becomes necessary to get your time back.

And eventually, there comes a point where continuing to carry everything alone no longer makes sense for the life they are trying to build outside of the office.

Whether it is more time with family, more time for hobbies, or simply more breathing room, it starts with the mindset that delegation is possible.

Just a reminder that in oral surgery, referrals are still built on relationships.

Referring offices tend to send to the specialists who stay visible, stay connected, and leave a meaningful impression over time.

And that does not mean every interaction has to be large or formal. In many cases, it is the smaller moments that matter most. Quick check-ins, consistent communication, conversations outside of the operatory, and simply staying present within the local dental community all play a role in keeping a practice top of mind.

As we continue moving toward more digital systems, automation, and efficiency, it is important not to lose sight of the foundation of referral growth: intentional interaction.

Because at the end of the day, people still refer to people.

Oral surgeons are some of the most intelligent, disciplined people we’ve encountered.

And oral surgery programs do an incredible job preparing surgeons clinically.

But private practice ownership introduces an entirely different skill set. Leadership, operations, communication, marketing, and team development quickly become part of the day-to-day.

For many doctors, the challenge is not capability. It’s navigating a side of ownership they were never fully exposed to during training.

That’s where the right support can make all the difference.

In oral surgery, referrals have always been a core part of the practice.

And even with the rise of direct-to-consumer marketing, that hasn’t really changed.

There’s a place for both. But relationships are still what sustain long-term growth.

The challenge is that referral marketing doesn’t always look like marketing. It’s often built in quieter ways, over time, through consistency and genuine connection.

It’s easy to overlook, but it’s still one of the most important parts of building a strong practice.
