One observation I’ve made from 30 years of working with compressed air systems is to never underestimate the ingenuity of plant personnel when it comes to misapplying compressed air. After your Compressed Air System has been optimized, leak detection and repair should occur as often as it makes financial sense. This could be every 3 months in some plants and once a year in others. A guideline for determining how often to do leak detection and repair is the cost of 1 scfm of Compressed Air use in your plant per year.

Enduralube UL is a synergistic blend of polyglycol (PAG) with polyol ester (POE) long-life synthetic lubricants. It is designed exclusively for rotary screw air compressor applications and is especially effective in applications where fluid is exposed to Elevated temperatures for extended periods of time. The expected life of Enduralube UL is 12,000 hours, or 50% longer than typical 8,000-hour OEM compressor fluids. It is especially advantageous in high temperature applications and does not leave a varnish or sludge residue as often happens with polyalphaolefin (PAO) or mineral oil-based products.

Oil flooded rotary screw air compressors use many different types of fluids, with many different base fluids and some are not compatible. There are many different types of fluid (mineral and synthetic) and additive technologies on the market today. Synthetic base fluids include polyalphaolefins (PAO), diesters, polyol esters (POE), Polyalkylene glycols (PAG), and silicone. These need special handling when converting to a new fluid.

A compressor unit which has been used for an extended period with petroleum oil is most likely filled with varnish that should be cleaned out during the conversion process. In keeping with good maintenance procedures, it is always prudent not to mix coolants/lubricants. Some lubricants contain additives or basestocks which are not compatible with one another.

ā€œIt seemed that every time we added anything to our process that used air, we were buying new compressors. Our guts told us we probably didn’t need ā€˜em, but we didn’t know what else could be done. We also suspected that our operating costs were going up unnecessarily, but we weren’t sure.ā€ said one production manager for a cement plant.

A cement import terminal had a multitude of problems that were causing production interruptions and environmental releases of dust due to poor air quality and low air pressure. The local compressor company diagnosed it as inadequate volume, drying and piping and recommended that all three be upgrade

An east coast bottler operated their air system the old fashioned way. Management delegated all decision-making to the maintenance department. Production told them what they needed and it was maintenance’s job to make sure they got all they needed when they needed it.

Why involve management and production with compressed air? After all, compressed air is something that’s pretty hard to understand and improvements can’t have a big impact on the bottom line.
