A leader who is not connected to their Personal Purpose will have a terrible time connecting those they are supposed to lead to the Purpose and Mission of the Organization. This is one reason why we have so many people that HATE their jobs.

Epstein Killed Himself (ClickBait):

I’ve watched a couple of documentaries recently about people (men in particular) that have accumulated nearly unlimited power and nearly untold wealth in the world. They then, quite predictably, grossly and horrifyingly abuse the heck out of these means to evil and unfortunate ends. Jeffrey Epstein was one of them. I won’t recap the documentary (feel free to watch it), but it shines a glaring light on what can happen if a person acquires huge amounts of Power (influence and resources) and is then never challenged on how it is being used nor where the trail is leading. He thought he was invincible. He believed his own press. He inhaled the aromatic vapors of the things which stroked his ego and found them not to stink. He thought since he had all the markers of worldly success, that he was immune from consequences… Now, whether he hung himself or not is yet to be determined, but regardless, his choices are what really killed him. None of us may be in that kind of danger, but none of us should find ourselves in anything that even looks like an abuse of power, either.

As a , one must accept the fact that there is (to one degree or other) a little Epstein in all of us. I know that’s not what anyone wants to hear, but it’s the truth. It’s a Condition of humanity. Sad experience has shown it to be true time and time again. As soon as we get a little Power, almost all of us (if left to ourselves) will begin to abuse it. Knowing this, one of our top priorities as Leaders should be to bring people around us to advise us and with whom we can share leadership. These aren’t “yes people”. These are people who share your vision of the Advantage you seek, and will not allow you to derail yourself from the Mission.

At the top of too many of our organizations, institutions, and governments sit men (and presumably women) who have let their nearly absolute power run out of control. They have allowed their desire to serve themselves to consume entirely any care or concern for anyone or anything else. It’s time for this to stop. We need an Evolution. It’s time for us to change ourselves and then Influence others to do the same. It’s time to put Virtue back into Leadership in a way that has been gone for a long, long time.

If this sounds like something you want, shoot us a note. Let’s talk about how we get there together.

TRUE STORY: A (semi-)farmer had a couple of cows which he “employed” his 2 sons to help take care of. A neighbor observed some mistakes that he felt were being made by the boys and he proceeded to let it be known in no uncertain terms to the father. The father’s response is instructive... “Well... thanks for the feedback, but I’m raising boys... not cows.”

It’s the same with each of us as leaders. Are we leading a business? Or are we leading people?

A recognizes that their legacy is not in their company. If we are chasing profits, or outcomes, or KPIs, (or whatever) at the expense of developing people, then we will have missed the mark. To lead with means that we must step back and look to create environments where people ACTUALLY are the top priority. We can’t just “lip service” it either. People aren’t stupid. They know when you are full of it. If we allow ourselves to get caught up in the “thick of thin things”, then we’re potentially headed down the wrong path.

Look, the business isn’t going to live forever. But the legacy we build in the people we are called to serve, can. It can live on in them and in the generations that they will influence. Let’s make something bigger than ourselves...
