When Denise Resnik looked for a place where her autistic son Matt could live on his own as an adult, it didn’t exist. So she built it.

First Place Phoenix is an apartment building in midtown Phoenix for adults with autism and other neurodiversities. Residents have their own one- or two-bedroom apartment, with their own kitchen and their own front door.

The support comes with the lease: a team for life skills, jobs, health and wellness, and daily community activities. There’s a 24/7 concierge, a zen room, an art studio, and a teaching kitchen. The building was designed with sensory needs in mind.

It isn’t a group home. It’s a place to live independently without having to do everything alone.

The honest part is the cost. Rent starts at $4,600 a month, including utilities and the support team. That is out of reach for most families, and it’s why so many people are pushing for models like this to be funded and copied in more cities.

Making new friends as an adult can be surprisingly difficult. Once school ends, there are fewer situations where you automatically spend time with the same group of people every day.

The good news is that you don’t necessarily need to “go looking for friends.” A better approach is to find things you enjoy doing with other people and keep showing up.

Friendships are much more likely to develop when you see the same people repeatedly, have something in common, and have a natural reason to talk.

During all those years before I finally got the right diagnosis of PTSD and AuDHD, chronic failure was a painful part of my life, both privately and at work. I often lost my jobs and I struggled in relationships, all of this without knowing why.

Living in a society where everybody is always so fast and harsh judging you based on your professional career and performance, chronic failure without knowing why can break you. I spent years feeling ashamed of myself, until finally a doctor took the time to do the right tests. Hearing the words, ‘None of it was ever your fault,’ was more than a big relief for me.
