Scala dei Turchi, Sicily. Images captured with a DJI 30T with 180 zoom. Fantastic paragliding day. Drone did not get any closer than 3000 feet to the paragliders. With the 180 zoom, completed the mission safely. Flight flown legally - Used D-Flight and D-Space for flight planning (Italian equivalent to LAANC). Complied with the European Authority for Aviation Safety (EASA) with drone registration in Croatia and pilot training in the A1/A3 and STS-T categories from Luxemburg (EU country offering training in English). Pilot/category registration in Croatia. Also complied with the EASA requirement for international drone insurance with a $1,000,000 policy.

Bullet train drone shot – exceedingly difficult to capture a drone shot of a bullet train moving at full speed. Bullet trains race through mountain tunnels between major cities. Bullet trains come out of the mountains to drop off passengers in cities. Three issues:
1) It is illegal to fly a drone in populated areas (where the bullet trains come out of the mountains)
2) In non-populated areas, bullet trains are in mountain tunnels. Tunnels are where the trains safely travel at high speeds. The challenge is finding the quarter mile sections where trains come out between mountains in non-populated areas
3) Calculating when a 210-mph train will come briefly out of the mountains in non-populated areas. We only had three drone batteries good for 30 minutes of flight time in high winds.
We took the bullet train from Hiroshima to Osaka – a trip of about 205 miles. All the while watching for when the train came out of the mountains in non-populated areas. Cathy captured the coordinates of one such spot near Aioi. Upon arriving In Osaka, we rented a car and drove the 70 odd miles back to Aioi.
The next challenge was predicting when a train would come out of the tunnel and go into the next tunnel a quarter mile away. We only had three batteries with 10 minutes effective time at altitude per battery. Japanese bullet train are famously on time. Using a timetable for Hiroshima departure and Osaka arrival, we calculated the time a train would pass through Aioi. We used up two batteries only to capture one shot upon landing. But the shot validated our predictive model and our next shot and final battery was right on!
