While routine is an important aspect of daily life, it’s also important to expand the boundaries of our comfort zone. Comfort-zone can quickly turn to complacency. This can be detrimental to success and ultimately, happiness.
There are many reasons we get stuck in comfort zones. For one, they are, well, comfortable! However, fear of the unknown can also keep us within our bounds of familiarity.
If you choose to stay within your comfort zone, indefinitely and unequivocally, that’s where the danger lies. That’s where you risk getting stuck, taking the path of least resistance, and fewest rewards. It’s a life where pushing your boundaries and moving out into the unknown becomes so terrifying that you not only give up the idea of pursuing your dearest dreams.
Here are some simple steps you can take to get out of your comfort zone.
1. Changing your surroundings and charting a new path changes the way your brain perceives things. A simple way to do this is to take a different route home from work.
2. Switch out the foods, smells, and tastes you’re used to by trying a new cuisine.
3. Change up your decision process. If you’re used to making snap decisions try to weigh your options and vice versa. This teaches you to trust your judgment and trust your gut.
4. Volunteer at a place that makes you uncomfortable. Spending time around things that scare you, or things you don’t know much about, helps you realize there’s nothing to fear. The unknown becomes approachable.
