They weren't accidents. They were architecture.

LIE #1: Long hours and hard work are the key to success.
The residency model was literally created by a co***ne addict at Johns Hopkins who worked insane hours because he was constantly high. That's not a joke — that's history. They buried you in impossible hours not to make you a better doctor, but to make you too exhausted to question the system.

LIE #2: Massive debt is just part of the journey.
Debt is the perfect chain. If you owe $300,000 and make $250,000 a year, you can't stop working. You can't take risks. You can't tell them to go to hell when they treat you like garbage.

LIE #3: Specialization is the path to respect and income.
They really wanted you to specialize to create silos. Territorial. Competitive. So focused on your tiny slice of medicine you'd never step back to see the machinery extracting wealth from your expertise.

One raised his hand and said:

"Matt, when I was in fellowship, I was told that doctors should NEVER discuss money with a patient."

I got angry.

Not at him. At the lie that had held him back for 25 years.

I looked at him and said:

"That is utter and complete bu****it. And I'd bet the doctor who told you that died dead broke and in debt up to his eyeballs."

With "good" insurance — my out-of-pocket cost: $850.

Three years later, I needed an MRI on my back.
