SHIELD TV gets server, , VUDU

The NVIDIA SHIELD is a nifty Android device that is quite perfect for developing graphics intensive apps, like games, thanks to its NVIDIA X1 chip and the shiny new .But at its heart, it is an entertainment device with a disposition for high quality, high resolution video. That nature is all the more emphasized in the latest firmware 3.2 update that brings, among other things, Plex server, support for 4K videos on VUDU and , and Netlix in HDR mode.

Earlier this month, Plex already revealed the good news about its new presence on the NVIDIA SHIELD. What makes it different from its normal Android app is that Plex on this particular Android TV runs as a server instead of a client. As it turns out, the SHIELD has enough muscle to not only serve up media to Plex client devices, like PCs or mobile, but also do HD transcoding itself. And you don't even have to be in the same local network, as streaming can be done even when you're on the go.

Although probably the highlight, Plex server isn't the only big thing coming to the NVIDIA SHIELD in this update. Plug in an HDR TV and the SHIELD becomes the first smart TV box to support Netflix's HDR mode, bringing a wider gamut of colors. If that TV also happens to be a 4K one, you can also enjoy 4K YouTube videos running at 60 fps, boasted to be possible only on the SHIELD. 4K also works with VUDU's video rental and sales service. And it's not only video either. The SHIELD now supports Dolby Atmos surround via pass through, at least for certain apps, like VUDU, MX Player, , and the Photos and Videos app.

With all those new high-quality videos, especially Plex server, you might start worrying about storage space, especially considering Plex works for both 16 GB and 500 GB models of the SHIELD. Never fear because NVIDIA now allows NAS drives to be attached, wirelessly of course, to the SHIELD for your repository of media files. Something less extravagant but equally significant is the ability to access SHIELD's folders from a PC or Mac connected via the same local network.

Together with the new features, the firmware update also fine tunes the SHIELD to work smoothly with new games, both from NVIDIA's GeForce NOW streaming titles, like Mad Max, Jotun, and Hard Reset, as well as SHIELD exclusive games like Resident Evil 5 and Space Hulk.

Ancient of silver unearthed in

A farm field in Scotland has yielded a dazzling harvest of ancient silver, left at a prehistoric stone circle more than a thousand years ago by someone who never recovered the treasure.

Surprised researchers found the trove at a site called in northeastern Scotland. The scientists were merely trying to learn more about Gaulcross, where 19th-century farm workers dug up a silver cache that has been almost entirely scattered and lost.

“We hoped we might find the odd fragment,” says archaeologist Gordon Noble of Scotland’s University of Aberdeen. “I don’t think we really expected in our wildest dreams to find more than 100 pieces of silver.” He and his colleagues report the new find in the current issue of the journal Antiquity.

The silver dates back to the 5th or 6th century, after the Romans decamped and before the Vikings stormed onshore. In this time of political and cultural ferment, Scotland was the realm of an enigmatic people known as the Picts. Often stereotyped as tattooed barbarians, the Picts certainly had a talent for war – but also a talent for carving stone and shaping silver.

The Gaulcross hoard, as the treasure is known, includes both Roman handiwork and fine Pictish goods. The Roman items include clippings of silver dishes and silverwork of a kind that adorned Roman military uniforms, says archaeologist Alice Blackwell, Glenmorangie Research Fellow at the National Museums Scotland, who is analyzing the hoard. There are also fragments snapped off Pictish brooches and bits of an extremely rare type of wrist bangle.

Like other hoards, the Gaulcross treasure has “preserved fashions (from) what we think of as the darkest bits of the dark age after the fall of the Empire,” says study co-author Martin Goldberg of National Museums Scotland. “It’s like a little snapshot in time.”

But the key to the mysterious treasure may lie not with the few intact objects but with the many small scraps of silver. Half of the hoard, says, consists of silver pieces smaller than a pinky fingernail, many the remains of hacked-up bracelets. Similar hoards have turned up in Denmark and Germany.

Such chop-shop collections may have been a way to squeeze value out of passé jewelry and worn-out tableware. So perhaps someone left behind the Gaulcross silver with every intention of retrieving it.

On the other hand, the silver was deposited at a stone circle that was already 2,000 years old at the time of the Picts’ rise. A century before the silver was dropped off, a war trumpet had been thrown into a nearby bog as a religious rite. So perhaps the silver, too, was a religious offering.

Whatever its ultimate purpose, these were elite items that would’ve belonged to the most powerful members of society, the researchers write.

“We don’t always see how wealthy past societies were,” says archaeologist Rob Collins of Britain’s Newcastle University. “These hoards really give us a glimpse of that. There’s a lot more glamor and bling that was circulating than we often see.”

‘Godless’ has affected over 8.5 lakh devices globally

A family of malware called Godless has affected over 8,50,000 devices worldwide, according to a report on . The report says more than half (46.19 per cent) of the devices alone have been affected in India, followed by Indonesia at 10.27 per cent and Thailand at 9.47 per cent.

“We came across a family of mobile malware called Godless (detected as ANDROIDOS_GODLESS.HRX) that has a set of rooting exploits in its pockets,” says Trend Micro.

The site reveals Godless can target any Android device running Android 5.1 or earlier. Malicious apps with Godless can be found on prominent app stores, including Play. It claims 90 per cent devices globally are already running on affected versions.

The site explains that once users download a malicious app, the malware waits until the device’s screen is turned off. It then roots the device and drops a payload as a system app that cannot be easily removed.

The malware installs unwanted apps on user’s device, leading to unwanted apps. In fact, these threats can also be used to install backdoors and spy on users, according to the site.

Users can however, restore to better practices when it comes to downloading app to avoid malware. “When downloading apps, regardless if it’s a utility tool or a popular game, users should always review the developer. Unknown developers with very little or no background information may be the source of these malicious apps,” says Veo Zhang, Mobile Threats Analyst.
He adds it is always best to download apps from trusted stores such as Google Play and .

tightens controls on paid-for search ads

China's Internet regulator said that search engines should tighten management of paid-for ads in search results, making clear which results are paid-for and limiting their numbers.

Chinese regulators last month imposed limits on the number of lucrative adverts carried by Inc following the death of a student who underwent an experimental cancer treatment which he found using China's biggest Internet search engine.

, 21, died in April of a rare form of cancer, and the case sparked widespread public anger.

The Administration of China said search engines should investigate the "aptitude" of clients offering paid-for ads, set a clear upper limit on such ads and clearly distinguish which are paid-for ads and which come from "natural searches".

"Internet search providers should earnestly accept corporate responsibility towards society, and strengthen their own management in accordance with the law and rules, to provide objective, fair and authoritative search results to users," it said.

Users have been particularly concerned with medical ads, which are a threat to people's health, the regulator added.

Baidu said in a statement that it was committed to providing the best search experience and will fully comply with the law.

"Baidu will work closely with government agencies, Internet users and the community to uphold a healthy Internet environment, and strive to provide objective, impartial, and authoritative search results to our users," it said.

Search engines also have other problems, the regulator said.

"Some search results contain rumours, obscenities, po*******hy, violence, murder, terrorism and other illegal information," it said.

"Some search results lack objectivity and fairness, go against corporate morals and standards, misleading and influencing people's judgement."

Officials say Internet restrictions, including the blocking of popular foreign sites like and , are needed to ensure security in the face of rising threats, such as terrorism.

Foreign governments and business groups have pointed to restrictions on the internet as a broader trade issue. —

Sky Zoo has launched for Android and iOS

If you play games on your mobile, you have probably spent a bit of time with one of Games titles. Crossy Road gained the developer millions of fans, and we are pleased to say Rodeo Stampede Sky Zoo Safari is just as addictive.

You can’t toss a rock without hitting an endless running game in the Play Store although we have seen some interesting approaches to the genre over the years. Crossy Road was unique due to its gameplay and overall setup, and the same can most definitely be said for Rodeo Stampede Sky Zoo Safari. It may have an odd name, but it’s the type of game you won’t want to put down…

Rodeo Stampede Sky Zoo Safari is an endless runner of sorts, as you don’t actually run, but ride on the back of various animals. That said, if you hit anything it’s game over, so you know the drill. The goal of the game is to lasso animals while on the back of another animal, which gives things a Frogger vibe once you get the hang of switching animals. Each stampede has goals, and when the rush is over, the weird part begins.

As the name implies, Rodeo Stampede Sky Zoo Safari is part Rodeo game… part Zoo Safari. While no weapons are involved, you do take your captured animals to a zoo in the clouds. It’s a bizarre twist, but a fun one that adds a whole different layer to the game. You can upgrade your zoo and manage it to bring in more visitors as well although it’s far from an actual management SIM type of game.

We haven’t spent too much time with Rodeo Stampede Sky Zoo Safari but feel confident saying that the team has done it again. Stampede is different enough to set itself apart from Crossy Road with the gameplay, but just as fun and with more replay value thanks to the Zoo set in the clouds.

Be sure to clear up some free time before sitting down with this one, but when you are ready to kill the rest of your day, you can pick up Rodeo Stampede Sky Zoo Safari for free on the Store or Play.

's latest mobile app is a conversational travel planner

is a travel search engine with a personality.

Yahoo's latest mobile app wants to help you browse more than just the internet. Radar, which launched today for , acts as your "virtual travel guide" by using machine learning and artificial intelligence (not to mention the travel confirmations in your email) to offer additional recommendations, reviews and activities around your next destination.

In its first version, Radar scans your Yahoo, , , or account to find your travel plans. From there, the app is a little less like a search engine and a little more like a chat bot. Once it finds your next trip to a major US city, it will make some basic suggestions, which you can refine based on some conversational, pre-populated answers like "Adventurous" or "Family friendly." Even without travel plans, you can peruse options in any city in the country. Radar currently draws from sources like TripAdvisor and Yelp to recommend destinations, restaurants and even must-order dishes, but as Yahoo VP of product management Conrad Wai explained to Radar will also surface additional sources from its search engine. Radar will also learn your preferences over time, so it will recommend more of what you like on next year's big vacation as well.

While Radar doesn't yet offer in-app booking for flights or hotels, Wai believes the simple interface will still cut out a lot of the headache of travel planning. "If I can combine some of the 50 tabs I have [when researching trip planning] on-the-go, it would be great," Wai told VentureBeat. "We're trying to aggregate, distill, and combine information for the user across the web."

Radar's iOS version is currently available in the App Store, but no word yet on if or when an version will come along.

At , it's Zuckerberg's way or the highway, experts say

Some investors are concerned about the future of Facebook after shareholders approved a new class of nonvoting Class C shares on Monday.

"You're basically placing all of your trust into the genius of one person, and even a great genius sometimes makes mistakes," Charles Elson, director of the University of Delaware's John L. Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance, told CNBC's "Closing Bell."

In April, CEO Zuckerberg said that the new stock structure would enable him to help Facebook "continue to build for the long term," while allowing him and his wife to pursue their philanthropic efforts. The structure allows the Facebook founder to sell his nonvoting shares, while retaining Class A and B shares, allowing Zuckerberg to retain control of the company.

Elson said that voting rights give shareholders means to "protect their capital by replacing management, replacing the board."

Facebook's new structure, he argued, puts investors at risk by lowering accountability for Zuckerberg, who sees as a "talented CEO."

Shareholder Julie Goodridge of NorthStar Asset Management told "Closing Bell" on Monday that she's not happy with the new share structure.

"My beef with Mark Zuckerberg is, look, it's fine if you want to maintain massive control of the company. You should've hung on to 51 percent of the shares. That's just fair and makes a whole lot of sense. He would've accomplished the same goal," said Goodridge.

Shareholder Ross Ge**er, CEO of Ge**er , disagreed, saying that investors have to accept that Zuckerberg is running the company on his terms.

"My thing is if you don't like it, don't buy the stock. ... If you don't like the structure and the way you're investing with Zuckerberg, then don't invest in Zuckerberg," Ge**er said.

Facebook declined to comment to .

builds world’s fastest

-China has built the world’s fastest supercomputer using locally made , a survey said Monday, the first time the country has taken the top spot without using US technology.

The machine is twice as fast as the previous number one, which was built in China with chips from US firm Intel, the Top500 survey of supercomputers said on its website www.top500.org.

China also has more top-ranked supercomputers than the US for the first time since the survey began, with 167 compared to 165.

Located at China’s national supercomputer centre in the eastern city of , the Sunway TaihuLight will be used for climate modelling and life science research.

Its performance ends “speculation that China would have to rely on Western technology to compete effectively in the upper echelons of supercomputing,” the survey’s website said.

The supercomputers on the Top500 list, which is produced twice a year, are rated based on speed in a benchmark test by experts from Germany and the US.

Of the top ten fastest computers, two are in China, with four in the US, the ranking said.

Others are in Japan, Germany, Switzerland and Saudi Arabia.

China has poured money into big-ticket science and technology projects as it seeks to become a high-tech leader.

It plans to open the world’s largest radio telescope in southeastern China this year, state-media reported.
But despite some gains the country’s scientific output still lags behind, and its universities generally fare poorly in global rankings.

Photos Now Supports

Google is about to save you a lot of mouse clicks when showing off pics of your recent vacation at your next family get-together.

The Web giant just updated Google with a handy new feature: the ability to play a slideshow from any album.

"You like crowding friends and family around your computer or TV to show them photos of last weekend's adventure," the company wrote. "You don't like clicking 132 times to show them each photo."

Now you won't have to. Just open the album, click on a photo, and select Slideshow from the drop-down menu. It's kind of surprising that Google is just adding this feature now; nevertheless, it's available on the Web and in the app. users are left out of the party for now

"For the ultimate viewing experience, cast the Chrome tab to your TV while you sit back, relax, and make everyone jealous with your amazing photos," Google recommended.

The update comes after Google earlier this year rolled out a feature that automates a lot of the album organization tasks you probably wish you had time to do. Once you've uploaded your snapshots, Google Photos will suggest a new album, curated with what it thinks are your best images. It then adds maps and drops location pins to show how where you snapped the pics. You can add text captions to complete the album, and then share it with your family and friends.
