Although people talk about how much job search has evolved over the years, from my perspective, one fundamental remains: people have always hired people.

The part that has changed, however, is the method by which communications get initiated and how/where hiring managers/recruiters can find you.

Today, hiring managers and recruiters tend to begin outreach through online/virtual communications and utilize (often AI-enabled) digital search techniques to locate potential candidates.

"There’s a lot of advice right now about applying to more roles.

More applications. More outreach. More activity.

And while effort matters, more isn’t always what moves the process forward.

It has become easier than ever to apply and harder than ever to stand out. With hundreds of applicants for a single role, the volume alone does not create traction.

That is where the fundamentals come back into focus.

The approach I take is shaped by my background in journalism, which at its core is about clarity and communication.

Understanding the story before trying to write it.
Asking questions that uncover what matters most.
Focusing on the details that connect your experience to what an employer needs.

These are not new techniques. In many ways, they are a more traditional way of approaching things.

But they continue to work because they align with how people process information.

Hiring managers do not read every word. They scan for what is most relevant. They look for a clear sense of direction and impact.

In today’s job market, more isn’t always better.

More applications. More automation. More noise. And often, less clarity.

It’s a tougher landscape than what we saw just a few years ago. With roles attracting hundreds of applicants and AI making it easier than ever to apply quickly, standing out has become more challenging.

That’s where I find the fundamentals still matter most.

My background in journalism continues to shape how I approach resumes and career storytelling. It’s a process rooted in curiosity, conversation, and clarity.

Understanding the story first.
Identifying what matters most.
Communicating it in a way that is easy to follow.

Much like how people read the news, hiring managers scan. They look for the headline, the key points, and a clear sense of direction.

With a background in journalism and corporate communications, I approach resumes the way reporters approach stories. I ask the right questions, look for the headline, and translate complex careers into clear, focused narratives.
