4 weeks or a little less left until June 14th arrives and that is the day of the 9th Annual Black Business Expo, presented by WTJU 91.1FM and Lifeview Marketing & Visuals, LLC at the Jefferson School Courtyard located at 233 4th St., NW, Charlottesville, VA. The event features panel discussions, business pitch competition with $1,500 in cash up for grabs, live performances, vendors, a gaming tent, and more. The event is FREE to all, and no registration fees for vendors but we have a limited number of booths left. If your business is Black owned then please sign up now before all booths are assigned. If you have a great idea for a business then challenge yourself to sign up to join the business pitch competition.

The Expo was founded as a response to events that occurred in Charlottesville on August 12th when the Alt-Right caused havoc in the city. Nine years later it has not missed a beat. This year's performances include a C'ville favorite's, Ebony Groove, and opening act, Jen Tal R&B Band. OKAY, I am disclosing a couple of films that I am very interested in seeing at the Virginia Film Festival next week. You may want to check these out! UNSTOPPABLE, LUTHER, and FIRE INSIDE. Read below but get your tickets at www.VirginiaFilmFestival.org

UNSTOPPABLE: Born with one leg, Anthony Robles defies expectations to become a champion wrestler in college, competing against the very school that rejected him. Directed by William Goldenberg—an Oscar-winning editor known for his work with Michael Mann, Paul Greengrass, and Ben Affleck—Unstoppable follows Robles as he becomes a high school wrestling star, but struggles to find a college that will recruit him, despite his outstanding record. He ends up walking on to Arizona State University’s team, where he has to prove himself once again.

LUTHER: Directed by Dawn Porter (Trapped, Rise Again: Tulsa and the Red Summer), this documentary traverses the late singer’s career, showcasing his journey from a boy with a dream in Harlem to a multi-Grammy award-winning household name. Through archival footage, photos, and anecdotes from Vandross’s closest friends and collaborators–including Mariah Carey, Dionne Warwick, Roberta Flack, and Jamie Foxx–the iconic artist’s life is finally, deservedly, and lovingly brought to the big screen. The film relives the many stunning moments of Vandross’ towering artistic career, while exploring his personal life, health struggles, and a lifelong battle to earn the respect his music deserved.

FIRE INSIDE: Sneaking into a local gym to spar with the boys, she catches the eye of coach Jason Crutchfield (Brian Tyree Henry), who mentors her through the highs and lows of her rise. As Claressa trains for the Olympics, the weight of her city’s hopes and her personal struggles test her resilience. Ryan Destiny delivers a powerful performance, balancing intensity and vulnerability, while Henry provides warmth and patience in a complex role.

The Indie Short Film Festival is a very proud sponsor of the 2024 Virginia Film Festival. Virginia Film Festival Tips from Ty Cooper.

With record breaking first day sales, the Virginia Film Festival is guaranteed to have unmatched energy on the weekend of Oct 30 - Nov 3rd, and that's saying a lot because the festival have created many amazing memories for us film festival attendees. Tickets went on sale to the public on Oct 11th and many films no longer have advance tickets available at this time.

So, what does this mean for you? Okay, it doesn't mean that you cannot get tickets for some of the screenings that are no longer available because most times sponsors or advance ticket buyers may return tickets and the box office will make them available. Have you ever seen a line outside of the theater when you know that you heard tickets were "sold out?" Well, often, that is why because tickets became available.

So, what should you do at this point? My suggestion for you is to get tickets! What are you doing just reading this post without taking action? There are many screenings available at this time. As for the ones not available at this time, stay tuned and I will post here when some become available - I PROMISE. For now, go to www.VirginiaFilmFestival.org to check out the schedule and buy tickets for those screenings that peak your interest. There is a lot to choose from.

The time has come ladies and gentlemen as the Virginia Film Festival has released the 2024 festival line up and it's HUGE!!! First, the sons of Denzel Washington tag team with one of them directing and the other starring in it. Presented by United Way of Greater Charlottesville. READ BELOW. Public ticket sales begin at Noon on Oct. 11.

The Piano Lesson, a strikingly cinematic adaptation of August Wilson’s titular play from Executive Producer Denzel Washington, directed by Malcolm Washington, and starring John David Washington (BlackKkKlansman) and Danielle Deadwyler. The film hinges on a fraught decision of what to do with a family piano that stirs up generations of trauma and memory.
