About the exhibit

“No witchcraft, no enemy action had silenced the rebirth of new life in this stricken world. The people had done it themselves.”

Rachel Carson, Silent Spring

“Mt Saint Cabbage” is a concept that is simultaneously ominous and optimistic. Building on our previous works we explore a fascination and fraught relationship with nature and question our effect on the earth as humans. The insidious amount of waste and pollution generated in consumer culture humbles us as we push back against the relentless bombardment and challenge that over consumption creates in our world. We are continually recycling, foraging, growing food and artist materials, in an effort to leave a smaller footprint. However, there is an ever present system surrounding us that challenges our efforts to heal and regenerate the soil and spaces around us. In our work we engage in fantasies of remediation and connection to ecosystems, and how we interact with nature.

About the exhibit

“TRAD” is an ongoing project by photographer Christopher Bickford featuring studio portraits of traditional Celtic folk musicians. Part of a larger body of work including native Irish, Scottish and international musicians, the current show will focus on the local Irish music scene, which in the last 30 years has grown from an underground coalition into a thriving community, thanks in no small part to the Blue Ridge Irish Music School, which was founded by Tes Slominski and Sara Read in 2000, and has been directed by Lori Madden for most of its lifetime.

“I work on a national remote team. However, with three of us in Charlottesville, we have created a small hub here. It’s wonderful to benefit from this shared space, but also not have to worry about the logistics of maintaining a full office on our own. Studio Ix takes care of everything so we can show up and focus on our work.“

“Several of the relationships that I've developed while working here have benefitted my business. That's a great thing, but it isn't much of a surprise. The unexpected rewards have stemmed from the friendships I have found and nurtured here..”
