Political savvy, in your first 90 days, is the skill most high performers skip.

When we go for low-hanging fruit and early wins, we sometimes forget the importance of political savvy and people in how things get done.

In this short video, executive coach Susan Robertson explains why understanding the politics is not the same as playing them.

Give me an hour for the Build Your Executive Edge Masterclass, and we will dive deeper into this topic.

The most dependable person in the building is rarely the one who gets promoted.

Sarah was that person. Every hard problem landed on her desk, and she solved it. She was proud she never played games or politics. She called it integrity. And she watched the promotion go to someone else, again, because she never learned how influence and decisions actually work.

Has this ever happened to you? It happens far too often to good, capable people.

So how do you build political savvy and clout without playing politics? Being a great team player is essential, but reading and working the power dynamics is what actually gets you chosen.

What do recruiters and hiring managers look for besides your experience, skills, and capabilities?

They are testing you with how you think. Their questions are designed to validate your thinking and are used as evidence to prove you achieved the results you say you achieved.

Share your thinking rather than the perfect answer.

He kept getting rejected. Sometimes he was just ghosted.

So, he kept redoing his resume. And still nothing.

The raise came instead of the promotion.

"You are just so valuable where you are." If that has ever landed in the pit of your stomach, keep reading.
A leader I coached was the one everyone relied on. She got everything done and stayed out of the politics, and she was proud of that. It also kept her stuck. Indispensable, and unpromotable at the same time.

Being politically savvy is not being political. Savvy is understanding people and how decisions get made. You can build that kind of clout without ever compromising your integrity.

This week, try one thing. Watch. Notice who really holds influence and what each of your peers is trying to win.

How many times have you tried to perfect something before you felt ready?

The resume. The profile. The message you keep meaning to send. You refine and refine... but ready never quite arrives, and while you wait, you stay invisible.

Perfecting never risks rejection. That is exactly why it feels safe. Meanwhile your tailored resume is getting screened out by a bot before a human ever sees your name.

So why keep auditioning for the algorithm? Get to a person instead.

That is what changed everything for the leader I've been writing about this week. He stopped perfecting and started connecting... a few messages a week to people who did not know him, always leading with his value.

This weekend, send one message. Share something useful. Help someone first.

How many times have you rewritten your resume this month?
Be honest. And how many real conversations did those rewrites actually start?

That's the trap. A polished document feels like progress, but it can't introduce you, and it can't say no either... so you keep hiding in it while the silence piles up.

The leader I've been writing about this week, John, was 55 and sure his age was the problem. It wasn't. His resume never named the value only he could bring. Once it did, he stopped applying into silence and started reaching out to real people.

Your weekend assignment: write one sentence that names your value. Say it out loud until it sounds like you.

You are not too late. You have just been too quiet.

What would your one sentence say?
