Happy Friday! It’s finally the weekend.

What does “holistic” mean? Thinking “holistic” is characterized by comprehension of the parts of something as intimately interconnected and explicable only by reference to the whole. When it comes to combating terror and countering an insurgency, the military looks at the threat as a system and the target as another system.

Meaning, we need to take a look at your entire organizations framework as a system to address your safety and security needs. In most cases, it is a matter of adjusting the current practices and procedures and not hiring a full time armed security guard.

Check out this Washington Post article: “Police de-escalation training gaining renewed clout as law enforcement seeks to reduce killings” written by Tom Jackson and Dan Morse.

“For many years, in these situations, police have been trained to meet force with more force, drawing their weapon and ordering the subject to drop that knife.

Now, in training academies around the country, officers are watching the video of Hines and others performing de-escalation. The training teaches police to create space, slow things down, ask open-ended questions and hold off reaching for their guns to avoid ramping up confrontation.”

One department saw its use-of-force incidents drop 28 percent with one training aimed at addressing encounters with subjects who aren’t armed with a gun but are in crisis.
