Lumbar Stenosis Exercise
👌 It is important to know that the most effective treatment for low back pain is controlled movement. Excessive rest can result in an increase in stiffness and weakness that could further exacerbate your disability by sensitizing your neurological system. However, progressive mobility exercises within a pain-free range will ensure your muscles and joints do not lose the freedom and willingness to move.
📈 I wanted to share with all of you a nice progression of back mobility for lumbar stenosis. Open Books should be initiated with active movement with the both hips and knees flexed to around 90 degrees. As pain-free movement improves, this can be easily progressed to the Million Dollar Roll (MDR) where the bottom leg is fully extended as the top leg remains flexed. Finally, advance the MDR to gentle self overpressure applied at end range to the top leg.
🔑 Each subsequent exercise promotes a greater degree of lumbar gapping. The exact lumbar level targeted can be manipulated by the degree of hip flexion. More hip flexion targets higher lumbar levels and less hip flexion targets lower lumbar levels. So, for a general mobility program performing these exercises with different degrees of hip flexion will provide greater benefits.
☝️ Note: Controlled movement holds true for MOST cases of low back pain. If you are dealing with EXTREME low back pain that has resulted in a neurological loss of sensation or weakness than a consultation from a spine specialist shoulder be undertaken.
