📲 Download a mileage app like Everlance or MileIQ.

They automatically track all your trips! Each week, you can go in and categorize whether they were for a personal errand or a legitimate business purpose.

More of a pen + paper person? ✍️

That's totally fine! For each trip, write down these things:

→ The date
→ Starting location + destination
→ Total business miles
→ Specific business purpose
→ Which vehicle you drove (if you drive multiple)

Whatever you do, the IRS wants you to keep a ~timely~ log, so make time for a 5-minute mileage review in your calendar each week. 📆

Yeah, that's just an old myth! 🙃

The thing you reallllly need to be careful about if you're a business owner who primarily works from home is that your home office space should be used regularly + exclusively for your business.

A kitchen table where you set up your laptop from 9 to 3, then host Taco Tuesday at 7? 🌮

That's exactly where the IRS starts to have an issue!

Home offices aren't an automatic red flag, but if you want to deduct yours, you generally need to keep personal use out of it.

Not getting the contractor's W-9 and not setting up your bookkeeping software to track payments by contractor.

This combo means you're signing yourself up for a ~not-very-fun~ January when 1099s are due...

Kidding, doing your own bookkeeping isn't thaaat bad... as long as you know what you're doing (and follow my advice on the next slides 🤭).

In my opinion, the best DIY bookkeeping set-up doesn't mean you have to have the most expensive software or have everything automated.

The best system is the one you'll stick with even when you're swamped with other work. 😅
