From CPD about the rise in crime of catalytic converters.

The CPD Auto Crimes Unit has seen an uptick in reported catalytic converter thefts recently. The devices contain precious metals and the scrap value for those metals has increased in 2020.

CPD offers the following tips for vehicle owners to help protect their property:
* If you have a garage, keep your vehicle(s) in it with the door closed when the vehicle is not in use.
* Park close to a building entrance when parking in a public lot.
* Park in well-lit areas.
* Park close to motion lights or security cameras.
* Auto part manufacturers sell devices to further secure catalytic converters.
* Having a converter welded in place also makes it more difficult to remove.
* Engrave the VIN number onto the converter to make it easier to identify in case it does get stolen.
* Contact CPD to report suspicious activity.

Anyone with information on recent thefts of catalytic converters is asked to call the Auto Crimes Unit at 423-698-2525.
