Yesterday I had the opportunity to attend Michigan Career Quest at The Ellison Place in Ga***rd, where students from all across Northern Michigan came to explore careers they may not have considered before.
I had the honor of assisting with the brand-new Ponsse North America Forestry Training Trailer through the Michigan Association of Timbermen . Inside the trailer are forestry equipment simulators, and I was able to walk students through operating the same types of machines I run every day in the woods!

The kids did an amazing job, and it was incredible to see so much curiosity, excitement, and willingness to learn. I only wish we had even more time to share just how many opportunities exist within the logging and forestry industry.

Our area needs skilled people in so many roles: 🌲 Consulting Foresters
🌲 Procurement Foresters
🌲 Harvester Operators
🌲 Forwarder Operators
🌲 Hand-fellers
🌲 Mill Operators
🌲 CDL truck self-loader operators
…and many more!

Forestry is so much more than cutting trees. It’s technology, sustainability, problem-solving, mechanics, mapping, trucking, environmental stewardship, and hard work that helps keep Northern Michigan moving.
As a female equipment operator in this industry, I’m especially proud to help introduce young people to a field where women currently make up only about 5% of equipment operators in the logging community. Hopefully events like this inspire the next generation to see that there is a place for everyone in forestry.

Huge thank you to everyone who helped organize Michigan Career Quest and to all the students who stopped by the trailer yesterday. You all did fantastic! I hope to see you in the woods one day! 🌲💪

🌲 From the forest to your kitchen — wood just works better!

At Northwoods Harvesting LLC we know better than most that wood is one of nature's most remarkable materials. So it's no surprise that wooden kitchen utensils beat plastic and silicone in ways that really matter:

🔥 Heat resistant — Wood doesn't conduct heat, so no burning your hands while stirring.

🦠 Naturally antibacterial — Wood actually pulls bacteria beneath its surface, where it gets trapped and dies. University of Wisconsin researchers found 99.9% of bacteria on wooden cutting boards were eliminated — plastic boards? They let bacteria multiply overnight.

🌿 Non-reactive — Unlike metal, wood won't leave a metallic taste in your tomato sauce or citrus dishes.

🍳 Cookware-friendly — Gentle on non-stick and enamel surfaces. No scratches, no damage.

♻️ Eco-friendly — Biodegradable and sustainably sourced, unlike plastic that ends up in a landfill.

💪 Built to last — With simple care, a good wooden utensil can last for years.

🥄Plastic melts. Silicone stains. Wood just gets better with age — kind of like the trees we work with every day. 🪵

What's your go-to kitchen utensil? Drop it in the comments! 👇

🌨️ What Are Frost Laws — and Why Do They Matter to Loggers? 🌲

Every spring in Michigan, seasonal weight restrictions (often called “frost laws”) go into effect to protect our roads during thaw. When the ground warms up, frost melts beneath the surface and the road base becomes soft and vulnerable. To prevent serious damage, legal weight limits are reduced — sometimes significantly.

👀 Here’s what many people don’t realize: 👀

If a logging job is not located on a Class-A road, truck drivers often cannot haul full loads of timber (or move their equipment) during frost laws.

A Class-A road is built specifically for heavy truck traffic. These roads have a stronger base and structure designed to support full-weight commercial loads, even during seasonal changes. Many rural or secondary roads simply aren’t built to handle that stress during spring thaw.

🤔 So what happens on non–Class-A roads? 🤔

• Trucks must shuttle partial loads to a nearby Class-A road (if there’s even an available, designated place to do that).
• Or they haul half-loads directly to the mill, which means more trips, more fuel, more time — and higher hauling costs.
* Some dirt roads can be "bonded" through the county, essentially meaning the logger or Forester pay a fee to use a section of the road that meets a class-A road so they're not trapped. The fee is then used to fix the road if it becomes damaged.

This is why loggers actively look for Class-A road jobs to work during the 4 to 6 weeks frost laws are in effect. It allows full loads to move legally and efficiently, keeps trucking costs where they should be, and keeps crews working without unnecessary expense.

Frost laws directly affect how, when, and where timber can move.

If you’re considering a harvest and have questions about road classifications or timing, we’re always happy to talk it through. 🌲

A vast majority of Northern Michigan was severely impacted by the ice storm that went through this past week. There are so many damaged trees! It truly breaks our hearts to see the absolute destruction the ice created.
If you own several acres of damaged timber, please don't just call anyone. First, utilize this website to find your local Forester - https://www.acf-foresters.org/
You can enter your address and a list of foresters in your area will pop up.
Also, utilize https://www.michigantimbermen.com/, Michigan Association of Timbermen's directory to find SFI certified loggers in your area. You want a crew that truly cares for the woods and does their best to salvage what you have.
We can't speak for everyone, but Northwoods Harvesting, LLC try our very best to be true stewards of the forest and we want to save as many trees as we can. We want to ensure healthy forests moving forward and that means we need to navigate the situation properly.
We hope everyone is recovering and staying safe at this time.
