Here’s a little Buffalo history you may not know.
In 1901, more than 8 million people came to Buffalo for the Pan-American Exposition. During the day there was plenty to see, but when the sun went down, the fair became something entirely different.
Electricity from Niagara Falls helped illuminate the grounds, outlining the architecture in thousands of lights and making the Electric Tower glow above it all.
Think about what that must have been like 125 years ago. For many visitors, this was a glimpse of the future, seeing how light could completely transform a building after dark.
More than a century later, that idea feels surprisingly familiar.
When we started S&K Holiday Lighting in 2009, professional Christmas lighting was still a pretty uncommon service around Western New York. We started simply because we loved Christmas and loved what lights could do to a home.
One season turned into 17, and a few houses turned into thousands.
We've watched the industry grow, families make us part of their traditions, and the lights themselves change in ways we never imagined when we started.
Today, traditional Christmas lights are still at the heart of what we do. But smart lighting has opened an entirely new world of possibilities.
The same lights that give you that classic Christmas look can change for Halloween, Thanksgiving, a Bills game, a birthday or a summer night on the patio. They can be seasonal or permanent, subtle architectural lighting or a full animated display, all controlled from your phone.
In a lot of ways, we're watching light transform our homes all over again.
Buffalo showed the world what was possible with light 125 years ago.
We've been fortunate enough to spend the last 17 bringing a little of that magic home to families throughout Western New York.
And after all these years, we're still just as excited to see what happens when the lights come on.
