What is Forestry Extension?

Much of the forest land in Western Washington is divided into small, private parcels. This presents a daunting task when it comes to maintaining healthy forests at a wide scale. Fortunately, it also presents an opportunity to reach out to small forest owners and create healthy Washington forests through a “bottom-up” approach.

Forestry extension consists of expert staff and faculty who are dedicated to assisting landowners with the complex and rewarding task of forest stewardship. Our goal is to provide education opportunities and resources to landowners and to increase awareness of the benefits of actively managing small forests. Forest stewardship revolves around your goals as the caretaker of your property. Washington State University Forestry Extension and our partners work together to help you achieve the vision you have for your forest.

WSU Forestry Extension in SW Washington is coordinated by Patrick Shults. Patrick received a B.S. and M.S. in Forestry from Michigan State University and worked in public outreach and education for forestry and conservation prior to moving to the Pacific Northwest to pursue a career working with small forest landowners. To contact Patrick, call at (360) 740-1213 or email at [email protected].
