Success nugget... WHERE'S MY ASSISTANT???

This morning started like any other.

Coffee? ✔️
Big meeting on the calendar? ✔️
Agenda prepared? ✔️
Confidence level? Through the roof. ✔️

Then my phone rang...

"Dr. Lewis, I'm so sorry. I'm sick and won't be able to make it today."

Oh no… silence… pause… Then I snapped out of it while thinking!

My assistant. My right hand. My "she already thought of it before I did" person.

No problem, I thought. We have two temporary team members helping this month.

Then reality showed up.

One looked at me like I had asked them to launch a rocket to the moon.

The other politely explained, "I've never done that before."

Meanwhile, the meeting clock was ticking... my paperwork seemed to multiply... technology suddenly became more complicated than usual... and I found myself asking...

"WHERE'S MY ASSISTANT???"

It was one of those moments that was funny... after I survived it.

But beneath the laughter was a powerful leadership lesson.

Sometimes we underestimate the people who quietly keep everything moving. They aren't always the loudest voice in the room. They may not have the biggest title. They may not be the one giving the presentation.

Yet when they're absent...

Everyone notices.

That's what it means to become the go-to person.

The person people trust.
The person who brings calm to chaos.
The person everyone hopes is in the room when the pressure is on.

Ladies, don't ever underestimate your value.

If your absence creates confusion...
If your knowledge can't easily be replaced...
If people breathe easier when you walk into the room...

You have become more than an employee.

You have become indispensable.

And here's the leadership challenge for all of us:

While you strive to become the person everyone can count on, also invest in developing others. Great leaders don't just carry the load. They teach others how to carry it too. That's how organizations grow, teams become stronger, and leadership is multiplied.

As for me...

The meeting went well.

My blood pressure eventually returned to normal.

And when my assistant comes back...
She just might receive the "Most Valuable Player of the Month" award.

Because today reminded me that one exceptional woman can have tremendous influence, even when she's not in the room.

Leadership Takeaway:
Your value isn't measured by how busy you are. It's measured by the positive impact you make, the confidence you inspire, and the difference people feel when you're there... and when you're not.

Now tell me... have you ever had one of those "Where's my assistant?" moments? I'd love to hear your story!

Success nugget... Leadership Word of the Week
COURAGE!

Courage is not the absence of fear. It is the willingness to take meaningful action despite uncertainty. Every successful leader encounters moments that require difficult decisions, uncomfortable conversations, or stepping into unfamiliar territory. Courage is what transforms potential into progress and dreams into achievement.

As women leaders, courage often means speaking up when our voices need to be heard, pursuing opportunities before we feel completely ready, and believing in ourselves even when the path ahead is unclear.

Three Ways to Apply Courage This Week
✅ Speak Up with Confidence
Share your ideas in a meeting or conversation, even if you're unsure whether everyone will agree. Your perspective has value.
✅ Take One Bold Step
Identify one goal you've been postponing and take the next actionable step. Progress begins with action, not perfection.
✅ Encourage Courage in Someone Else
Support another woman by recognizing her strengths, recommending her for an opportunity, or simply reminding her that she is capable of more than she realizes.

Leadership Reflection
How will you demonstrate courage this week in your leadership, career, or personal growth?

I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments.

Helping women show up, rise up, and lead with confidence.

Success nugget... EMPOWERING FEMALE LEADERS!

The conversation around leadership has changed, but one truth remains: when women support women, extraordinary things happen.

Today's female leaders are navigating complex workplaces, leading through uncertainty, and creating opportunities for the women who will follow. Leadership is no longer just about reaching the top. It is about extending a hand, opening doors, sharing knowledge, and ensuring another woman has the confidence to take her seat at the table.

When we advocate for one another, celebrate each other's successes, and champion the voices that deserve to be heard, we create a ripple effect that transforms organizations, communities, and future generations. There is enough room for every woman to lead, succeed, and make a meaningful impact.

As women, let us choose collaboration over competition, encouragement over criticism, and unity over division. Our greatest legacy will not be measured only by what we achieve individually, but by how many women rise because we believed in them.

"Each time a woman stands up for herself, she stands up for all women." (Maya Angelou)

Let's continue to show up, speak up, lift each other up, and lead with confidence, courage, and purpose.

If you are ready to elevate your leadership, strengthen your executive presence, or develop the next generation of women leaders within your organization, Dr. Lewis is available for leadership coaching, executive development, workshops, and keynote presentations. Success nugget… Why Are So Many Talented Women Still Struggling to Advance?

For decades, women have worked hard, earned degrees, developed expertise, and delivered results. Yet many still find themselves asking the same question:

"Why am I being overlooked?"

Research continues to point to five major barriers that often stand between women and career advancement:

🔹 Institutional Bias
Bias is not always obvious. Sometimes it appears in hiring decisions, promotion opportunities, compensation practices, or assumptions about leadership potential. Women often have to prove themselves repeatedly, while others are presumed capable from the start.

🔹 Corporate Culture
Many workplace cultures were built around outdated leadership models that may not fully value diverse perspectives, collaboration, empathy, or inclusive leadership styles. Women can find themselves navigating environments where they feel pressure to conform rather than lead authentically.

🔹 Lack of Sponsorship
Mentors provide advice. Sponsors advocate. One of the biggest career accelerators is having someone in a position of influence who actively recommends you for key opportunities. Too many talented women have mentors but lack sponsors who are willing to champion their advancement.

🔹 Work-Life Conflict
Women often carry multiple responsibilities, balancing careers, families, caregiving, and personal commitments. The challenge is not capability. The expectation is that women should successfully manage everything while maintaining peak professional performance.

🔹 The Motherhood Penalty
Studies have shown that mothers are frequently perceived differently in the workplace. They may be viewed as less committed, offered fewer opportunities, or overlooked for leadership roles despite having the same qualifications and performance as their peers.

The good news? These barriers do not define your future.

Here are a few strategies that can help:
✅Advocate for your accomplishments and make your contributions visible.
✅ Build relationships with decision-makers and potential sponsors.
✅ Seek leadership opportunities before you feel "100% ready."
✅ Invest in continuous learning and professional development.
✅ Create boundaries that protect your energy and support your long-term success.
✅ Surround yourself with people who believe in your potential and encourage your growth.

As Oprah Winfrey once said:
"Think like a queen. A queen is not afraid to fail. Failure is another stepping stone to greatness."

Women have never lacked talent, intelligence, or capability. What we need is greater visibility, stronger advocacy, and the confidence to claim the opportunities we deserve.

Your voice matters. Your expertise matters. Your leadership matters.

Do not allow barriers to become permanent roadblocks. Continue to show up, speak up, and rise up.
