A new recommendation for adult alcohol consumption — from an international team of scientists — differs from the U.S. dietary guidelines, both past and present. Previous guidelines recommended a daily limit of two alcoholic drinks for men and one for women. The latest version, released by the Trump administration in January, is less precise. It recommends only that Americans “consume less alcohol for better overall health.”

The current less-is-best message is accurate but too vague, said a study co-author. People need quantified guidance so they can make informed decisions about their drinking, she said.

The scientists looked at 56 systematic reviews of the relationship between alcohol and health and applied those findings to mortality data in the U.S.

They found that men who consumed more than 6.5 drinks per week and women who consumed more than seven drinks per week had greater than a 1-in-1,000 lifetime risk of dying from an alcohol-related disease or injury. The risk jumps to greater than 1 in 100 for both sexes if they have more than 8.5 drinks a week. At 14 drinks a week, Americans’ lifetime risk climbs to 1 in 25.

Humanity’s Farthest Traveler Nears One Light-Day Distance as It Drifts Through Interstellar Space.

In November 2026, NASA’s legendary Voyager 1 will achieve a milestone no human-made object has ever reached—it will be one full light-day from Earth, about 25.9 billion kilometers away. Launched in 1977 to explore Jupiter and Saturn, the spacecraft is still sending data nearly five decades later.

At that distance, a radio signal from Earth will take 24 hours to reach Voyager 1, and another 24 hours for its response to return. A simple exchange will become a 48-hour conversation, highlighting the immense scale of interstellar space.

Traveling at roughly 61,000 km/h, Voyager 1 is now far beyond the planets, carrying humanity’s message into the cosmos. Despite its incredible journey, it has covered only a tiny fraction of the distance to the nearest star, reminding us just how vast the universe truly is.

Devil’s Den at Gettysburg. Few are aware that this photo was staged with bodies moved about to “improve” the image!

I doubt anyone is surprised to see this photo coming in at #5 in My Top 50 Most Classic Photos of the Civil War. Home of a Rebel Sharpshooter depicts a soldier, almost certainly from Texas or Georgia, stands out among the ~100 other Civil War photos depicting human carnage. He looks like he’s sleeping. He’s young. He’s not disfigured. The boulders and stone wall, with Little Round Top in the distance, completed the composition and made it a classic long before Frederic Ray and William Frassanito demonstrated that the soldier was moved to this position after being photographed down the slope. This is the only documented instance of Civil War photographers moving human remains for a photo.

A marvelous piece of history!
