Our project at this stunning church involved research, investigation, and development of decorative schemes throughout the interior. Based on the historic design uncovered & scientific paint analysis, the decorative finishes were conserved and reinstated in the sanctuary, nave, transepts, balcony, and aisles. Plaster and fine art murals were also conserved and restored.

Glazing can be used to mimic a more expensive finish, such as gold leaf. Glazes are thinned, transparent, or semi-transparent colors in oil or water that can be applied using several methods including rag-rolling or stippling to achieve different textures. Glazes can be applied to gilded walls, ceilings, or ornament to create a variety of tones or metals. The image shows a cast plaster capital with aluminum leaf in the middle and aluminum leaf glazed to mimic gold on the right.

Our team restored and replicated this beautiful simulated mosaic at the First Church of Christ Scientist in Boston. The stenciling throughout was carefully documented, and each color custom matched. Replicating the simulated mosaic required a multi-step process, and the simulated mosaic stenciling at the upper walls included as many as eight separate colors to replicate in its entirety.

At this historic shrine, our team uncovered intricate designs through detailed paint exposures. These elements were reinstated to restore the original design scheme, complete with a stunning silver leaf finish and stylized fleur-de-lis patterns, reflecting the beauty of the original color palette.

In redesigning the Archdiocese of the Military Chapel, we seamlessly blended traditional and modern design. Inspired by classical details, we reimagined the designs to complement the mid-century modern lines of the space. Three sacred fine art murals, shown here, further integrated traditional elements into the contemporary space.

Through project case studies we will evaluate the use of a historic paint investigation and plaster survey and how, through the investigative process, the restoration of decorative finishes and the preservation of original plaster surfaces were implemented.

Canning is an authorized installer for Historic Plaster Conservation Services (HPCS), giving us access to specialized products designed to address plaster detachment, cracking, and structural instability. Using advanced materials, techniques, and tools, we reinforce and reattach existing plaster on ceilings and walls by stabilizing it at the substrate level. By prioritizing consolidation, stabilization, and conservation over replacement, we work to retain as much original material as possible while supporting the long-term performance of the plaster system.
