Our project at the Culinary Institute of America included the restoration of the faux mosaic decorative painting in Farquharson Hall. We conducted investigations of materials, including decorative paint, and uncovered faux mosaic details through conducting paint exposures. The faux mosaic decoration in the ceiling’s spandrels was carefully examined to determine their structural condition, then stabilized and restored using the proper methods. As part of our project working with BLT Architects, we provided the decorative finishes on the new coffered ceiling at the Union League of Philadelphia. The ceiling was reinstated based on a historical sketch by the original architect, Horace Trumbauer. Through mock ups and collaboration, a final period-appropriate color palette was established and applied to the decorative ornamental plaster ceiling.

As part of one of our many projects at Yale University, our team restored the Alma Mater mural at the Sterling Memorial Library. Originally painted by Eugene Savage, the mural depicting allegorical symbols to represent the academic schools had become dark and damaged. We stabilized the delaminating composite relief and restored the gilding using historic photographs and research to guide the restoration process.

Canning is an authorized installer for Historic Plaster Conservation Services (HPCS), giving us access to specialized products designed to address plaster detachment, cracking, and structural instability. Using advanced materials, techniques, and tools, we reinforce and reattach existing plaster on ceilings and walls by stabilizing it at the substrate level. By prioritizing consolidation, stabilization, and conservation over replacement, we work to retain as much original material as possible while supporting the long-term performance of the plaster system. The Corinthian order, originating from Corinth, is one of the most extravagant orders. According to legend, acanthus leaves that were left underneath a basket on a young girl’s grave started growing around and engulfing the basket. The appearance of this occurrence served as the inspiration for the Corinthian capital. Palladio calls this order, “more gentile, rich, and beautiful than any of those I have yet discoursed upon.” Many of the columns and pilasters at the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe are a beautiful example of the elegant Corinthian order.
