Trump dismantled America’s climate science portal — former NOAA scientists just rebuilt it themselves to give all citizens free access to public environmental data.

When federal workforce cuts and restructuring under the Trump administration led to the sudden shutdown of Climate. gov (the U.S. government's official public climate portal) Americans abruptly lost access to critical public climate data.

For fifteen years, the platform had translated complex meteorological data into accessible maps, charts, and articles, attracting nearly one million monthly visitors ranging from educators to emergency planners.

While the underlying climate data remained on government servers, it became incredibly difficult to navigate.

Refusing to let this vital public resource vanish, a group of laid-off employees from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) banded together to preserve access to the information.

Driven by a determination to keep scientific facts accessible, the former staffers launched Climate. us, a direct, independent replica of the original site. Rebuilt outside federal control, the project was fueled by over $280,000 in crowdfunding, an anonymous operational grant, and the tireless efforts of roughly 80 volunteer scientists.

The restored platform resurrects original features, including its beloved climate dashboard, educational databases, and interactive maps. Crucially, the site's creators pledge to maintain a strict, policy-neutral stance, presenting objective climate science to help communities navigate real-world threats like heatwaves, droughts, and severe storms, completely shielded from future political interference.

One of the most persistent excuses for why atmospheric CO2 is increasing is that, "it's volcanoes, not us." It isn't, and it's not even close.

All the world's volcanoes combined, on land and under the sea, release about 0.6 billion tons of CO2 a year. Humans release nearly 38 billion tons just from burning fossil fuels alone. That's more than 60 times more CO2 from coal, gas, and oil than from all geologic activity on the planet, every year.

In fact, as this helpful Climate.US article explains, "today, rather than warming global climate, volcanic eruptions often have the opposite effect. That's because carbon dioxide isn't the only thing that volcanoes inject into the atmosphere. Even small eruptions often produce volcanic ash and aerosol particles."

Yes, you got that right: volcanic eruptions primarily cool the earth. And today, it's warming faster and faster. Climate is changing and the number one reason for that are the heat-trapping gas emissions we produce from burning fossil fuels.

This is what decline looks like when it still calls itself strength:

poison the water, protect the past, lose the future, and make the public pay to clean it up later.

That is not energy dominance.

That is nostalgia with a bill attached.

Narrative vs reality.

The narrative is power. Drill more. Burn more. Roll back protections. Treat coal, oil, and pollution like proof that America is still in control.

The reality is dirtier water, higher long-term costs, weaker public health, and a country letting China race ahead in clean energy while we fight to defend yesterday’s smoke.

This is bigger than climate.

It is about whether America still knows how to build the future before someone else owns it.

Real strength is not poisoning rivers so an old industry can feel protected. Real strength is cheaper energy, cleaner technology, healthier communities, and the discipline to compete where the world is actually going.

But threat-based politics does not build that way.

It protects symbols.
It protects resentment.
It protects the old story.

So clean energy becomes weakness. Conservation becomes obstruction. Regulation becomes tyranny. Pollution gets dressed up as freedom.

And then the country pays.

We pay in health.
We pay in lost leadership.
We pay in cleanup costs.
We pay in years, maybe decades, of repair for damage that did not have to happen.

They are not protecting American energy.

They are making Americans pay for the past while the future leaves without us.
