Stop looking for handouts and start looking for partners.

One of the biggest hurdles I see non-profits face is the "charity case" mindset. When you approach a donor or a corporation like you’re asking for a favor, you’re selling yourself short.

The truth is, you are an essential partner in this community. Without your organization, there is a gap that wouldn’t be filled. You provide solutions, and that has immense value.

In my work as a DBA and strategist, I help non-profits flip that script. We move away from survival mode and toward strategic planning that proves your impact. You’re not just asking for a check; you’re offering a seat at the table to solve real-world problems.

It’s time to stop asking and start leading. Let’s build a strategy that makes your mission indispensable.

The HP Future of Work Accelerator closes tomorrow. $100,000 is on the line, but is it worth the last-minute scramble?

We’ve all been there, seeing a big grant deadline and feeling that instant pressure to drop everything and apply. Before you pull an all-nighter, let’s look at it through the Vision | Plan | Results framework.

Vision: Does this $100k actually fuel your long-term mission, or are you just chasing the number? If the grant requirements force you to pivot away from your core work, it’s a distraction, not an opportunity.

Plan: Take a hard look at the application. Do you have your data and "why" ready to go? A rushed application rarely wins. A strategic, well-prepared push is the move.

Results: Choosing when to say "no" is just as important as saying "yes." If it fits your trajectory, go for it. If not, save that energy for the next opportunity that actually aligns with your goals.

Are you scrambling today, or staying focused on the plan? Let’s talk about it in the comments.

Relying 100% on grants is like building a house on shifting sand: it works until the tide changes.

If your non-profit feels stuck in that endless cycle of "apply, wait, repeat," it’s time to focus on long-term sustainability. With my background in Business Administration (DBA), I’ve spent years helping organizations move beyond grant dependency through strategic planning.

The goal isn’t to ditch grants entirely, but to ensure they aren’t your only lifeline. By diversifying your income: through social enterprise, community partnerships, or recurring donor programs: you can create a stable foundation for your mission.

Let's build a plan that keeps your impact growing, no matter what the next grant cycle looks like.

Ever wonder why some grant applications get a "No" before you even get a chance to explain your mission?

It’s not because your vision isn’t big enough. Usually, it’s the administrative details.

In my experience as Director of Grants and Special Programs, I see it all the time. One missing signature, a mislabeled PDF, or ignoring the formatting rules can trigger an auto-rejection. A human hasn’t even seen your incredible project yet because a computer filter caught a technical error.

This is where project management discipline comes in. At The Business Coach, we live by the Vision | Plan | Results philosophy. Your Vision gets you excited, but your Plan (and the administrative accuracy that comes with it) is what actually gets you the Results.

Don't let a typo stand in the way of your impact. Take that extra hour to double-check the fine print and follow the submission guidelines to the letter. It’s the difference between an auto-rejection and a funded program.

Let’s get real for a second: are real-time impact dashboards just a flashy trend, or are they actually the "new normal" for non-profits?

I talk to a lot of small non-profit leaders who feel like sophisticated tracking is total overkill. They’re busy doing the work, and the idea of a live dashboard feels like just one more tech headache.

But here’s the shift: strategic planning isn’t a "set it and forget it" thing anymore. If you’re only checking your impact stats once a year for an annual report, you’re flying blind for the other 11 months.

Think of it as your organization’s GPS. You need to know if you’re off course right now so you can pivot. It’s not about having the most expensive software; it’s about having the right data to drive your decisions.

At The Business Coach, we live by a simple framework:
Vision | Plan | Results

A dashboard just helps you see those results in the moment, making your plan way more effective.

What do you think? Is real-time data a game-changer for your team, or just extra noise? Let’s chat in the comments!
