Cinco de Mayo Is Not a Holiday in Latin America

Every year on May 5th, Americans erupt in margaritas and mariachi. But ask someone in Mexico City what they’re doing for Cinco de Mayo — and you’ll likely get a blank stare.

The date marks the Battle of Puebla in 1862, where an outnumbered Mexican army defeated French forces in a remarkable upset. But France regrouped, occupied Mexico for years afterward, and the battle never ended the war. Mexico’s real national holiday is Día de la Independencia — September 16th, when the president rings the bell from the National Palace and the whole country celebrates.

★ Quick Fact: Cinco de Mayo is only an official holiday in the state of Puebla, where the battle took place. The rest of Mexico treats it as a minor footnote — not a day off.

So how did it become such a big deal in the U.S.?

Mexican American communities in the Southwest began commemorating the battle in the 1860s as a symbol of resistance. Then, in the 1980s and 90s, beer and spirits brands — Corona, José Cuervo, and others — recognized an opportunity and turned it into a commercial juggernaut.

Today it generates billions in bar and restaurant revenue annually.

For many Mexican Americans, it’s still a genuine moment of cultural pride. But across Latin America? It’s an ordinary Tuesday. So raise a glass — just know that in Mexico, most people are already at work.
