There are many theories on the origin of April Fool’s Day, and most likely the current rendition of April Fool’s Day is a combination of all of them.
We like the theory that in the 1500’s, France moved from the Gregorian Calendar to the Julian Calendar, thereby changing the first day of the New Year from April 1st to January 1st. Those who did not accept the change, or were slow to accept it, were deemed April Fools.
Many other ancient cultures welcomed the beginning of spring with celebrations that involved dressing up and jokingly breaking societal rules.

You can prevent frozen pipes by installing a low temperature alarm that will alert you by sending a message to your smartphone if the temperature drops below a pre-set level.
