Quick intro to the panelists for next week's complimentary conversation on nonprofit finance.

Mark Rodriguez has 30+ years leading social impact organizations across the nonprofit and private sectors. He's now CEO of Lohengrin Foundation.

Juliette Buford ran a $40M+ budget at WTTW-WFMT for 20+ years. Today she's Deputy Director of Finance and Operations at Marwen.

Omari Kamal is a Fractional CFO at P&G Advisors. He works with nonprofits that don't have a full-time CFO and brings the practitioner's perspective.

We're talking honestly about running a nonprofit without an in-house CFO. What's working. What's hard. What they wish someone had told them.

Thursday, May 14, 11:00am CT, Zoom. On us. No strings attached.

Quick question for the nonprofit leaders in this community:

When you adopted your last AI tool, what problem were you actually trying to solve?

I ask because I'm hearing the same thing from EDs across the country right now. They added AI, and somehow ended up with more on their plate, not less.

It makes sense when you look at it closely. AI tools generate outputs you have to review.

Automations fire at times you have to check. Drafts land in your inbox that need decisions.

Without a clear operational picture underneath all of it, you've just added a layer of new decisions on top of the old ones.

That's not a tool problem. That's a strategy problem.

The good news: it's fixable. And it doesn't require scrapping everything you've set up. It requires getting honest about what you're actually trying to accomplish and building back from there.

If this is where you are, come join us in Strategy Studio. We work through exactly this kind of thing together, every month.

Real talk: Your board members aren't avoiding fundraising because they don't care.

They're avoiding it because you're asking them to do something that feels awful.

Most nonprofits try to "train" their board to fundraise. I help you change what you're asking them to do.

Board members are amazing at making introductions, sharing stories, and opening doors. They're terrible at making cold asks.

Work with what they're good at.

This week's blog post breaks down exactly how to shift from board members who avoid fundraising to board members who actively help you raise money.

Had so much fun hand delivering the new CauseCueโ„ข cards to the Y.E.S.S. Board of Directors and role-playing ways to use them in real conversations. If you feel moved by YESS4Youthโ€™s commitment, over 80% of their participants secure housing and employment, please scan the QR code and make a donation today. Every bit of support helps change lives for the better.

Last week, I had the honor of visiting one of the South's most treasured cultural landmarks: the Historic Douglass Theatre in Macon, Georgia.

Founded in 1921 by Charles H. Douglass, Macon's first Black millionaire, the Douglass Theatre was built as a response to segregation. When the community couldn't attend the all-white theaters nearby, they didn't wait for permission. They created their own space, a bold statement of pride, resilience, and excellence.โ€‹

This stunning venue became a cornerstone for Black artists and audiences, hosting legends like Ma Rainey, Bessie Smith, Cab Calloway, Duke Ellington, Little Richard, James Brown, and a young Otis Redding, who won 15 consecutive talent shows on that very stage. The Douglass wasn't just a theater. It was liberation, joy, and community wrapped in velvet seats and golden lights.โ€‹

After closing in the 1970s, the theater was lovingly restored and reopened in 1997, continuing its legacy as a vibrant arts and cultural hub.โ€‹

I'm deeply grateful to Shelton Land for trusting IntuWork Consulting to partner with the Douglass Theatre in developing a financial sustainability plan. Walking through those halls, sitting in that breathtaking auditorium, and learning the stories behind every corner reminded me why this work matters. Historic spaces like the Douglass deserve to thrive for generations to come.

Here's to preserving legacies, honoring history, and building sustainable futures for the places that shaped our culture.

I recently had the privilege of supporting the Foundation for their 3rd Annual Pathways to Health Equity Breakfast Symposium, held on October 4th at the University of Chicagoโ€™s Rubenstein Forum. This event was all about empowering the next generation of STEM leaders and bridging persistent gaps in health and medical careers.

High school STEM Scholars took the spotlight, sharing their research with confidence during a lively poster session. Seeing students from a variety of backgrounds present their hard work and dreams for the future affirmed the CPASS mission, expanding opportunity and building leadership for real change.

We honored . Mildred MG Olivier, Associate Dean at Ponce Health Sciences University and a pioneer for women in medicine, with the John Bradley Award. Dr. Olivierโ€™s career embodies vision, trailblazing leadership, and constant advocacy for equity.

Participants learned from . Walter D. Conwell, CEO of TruLite Health and renowned for his work in medicine, education, and health equity. The event featured an amazing panel, moderated by . William McDade, including . Monica Vela, a leader for Hispanic excellence in medicine, and Sรกnchez, CEO of Humboldt Park Health.

Thanks to everyone who made this community-building morning possible, and a special shout-out to volunteers Geneva Porter, Nikisha Horn, and Skye Watts.

The relationships, mentoring, and knowledge shared at the symposium truly echoed the CPASS vision, a future where every student has the support to rise as a leader and change-maker in STEM.
