Our theme this month is "The Older Baby"
Often the first challenges families face with an older breastfed baby is the return to work. There are so many variations of "work" now - some people work full time from home, some go into a workplace, some are hybrid, some are part time, some travel, etc. AND...many variations of care - daycare, relatives, nanny or nanny-share, and more! Questions around pumping and volumes per bottle and paced bottle-feeding abound! I often advise discussions with care providers around the desire to keep bottles paced and slow flow, in order to help pumped output match ounces given! Reach out to your IBCLC if daycare is asking for more than you are pumping, if baby has been on breastmilk alone up until this point. We can often help analyze the WHOLE story for that baby, and come up with the best plan forward. Hats off to all the working parents out there!

Sometimes, with low milk supply, it is worth asking your provider to do some bloodwork to check prolactin levels, and follow-up on any health issues that may impact milk supply (things like anemia, thyroid function, insulin resistance, PCOS, etc).

When considering low milk supply, start with some basics...is baby eating approx 8-12x/24hrs? Are they "efficient"? This means active swallowing, not just suckling/soothing, and a baby who has good oral function (and no other medical challenges)!

I wish more families would be introduced to using an SNS (supplemental nursing system) at the breast prior to introducing bottles! This is a way to supplement, if needed, and keep baby at the breast!
