ChiByDesign has exciting news! We are a 2025 Anthem Awards winner for three collaborations last year.

The Silver Award in the Health Community Engagement category for “Empowering Young Women through Wellness,” a collaboration with Nike to create new programming for young women in Chicago.

The Bronze and the Community Voice Awards in the Human & Civil Rights Community Engagement category for “Strengthening Family Connections,” a partnership with Illinois Action for Children, that aimed to address the barriers incarcerated parents and their families face.

The Bronze and the Community Voice Awards in the Human & Civil Rights Public Service Product, Innovation, or Service category for “Maternal Success Kit,” a collaboration with the Department of Children & Families (DCF) and Powerful Families, Powerful Communities (PFPC), focused on co-designed interventions for child and family wellbeing for Black and Brown mothers in New Jersey.

We want to celebrate our partners in these collaborations and the incredible co-designers who shared their lived experience and expertise. Because of them, we commit to this work and strive to imagine and create futures that serve all. We would not have this recognition without them.

We look forward to what we accomplish together in the future.

Our CEO, Chris Rudd, kicked off the 2024-25 Public Seminar Series with an inspiring talk at the School of Design! He shared insights about design’s power in political activism and how ChiByDesign equips organizations to serve communities of color. This year's series encourages reflection on design’s impact—its potentials, failures, and the roles it might play in shaping the future.

Grateful for the collaboration with faculty leads Norman Teague , J. Dakota Brown, and Director Anne H. Berry, who helped make this conversation possible.

Our project, "Maternal Success Kit," is a finalist for an Anthem Award! In addition to the Gold, Silver, and Bronze Anthem Awards, we can win our category's Community Voice award.

"Maternal Success Kit" was the center of an anti-racist infrastructure that began to address structural challenges Black and Brown mothers face in New Jersey. There are three critical components of the new infrastructure: 1) components and criteria for the maternal kit creation; 2) the “Count on Me” network to repair civic connections and provide informal support that mothers need during pregnancy and after childbirth, and 3) policy recommendations that address long-term system changes to support the success of expecting mothers and the kit.

In this collaboration, we sought to support expectant mothers and the New Jersey Department of Children and Family’s transformation. Black and Brown mothers experience nuanced disparities with the child welfare system and adjacent systems (i.e., the healthcare system) during pregnancy and post-childbirth. We convened 21 lived experts and system actors (within child welfare and adjacent systems) to receive feedback on their experiences and co-create the maternal kit.

Our project, "Maternal Success Kit," is a finalist for an Anthem Award! In addition to the Gold, Silver, and Bronze Anthem Awards, we can win our category's Community Voice award.

There is clear evidence that the current child welfare system in New Jersey creates disproportionately adverse outcomes for Black youth and families in particular, and families of color generally. Black children are 13% of the population under 18 in New Jersey but are dramatically overrepresented in foster care, making up 42% of the children taken from their families.

"Strengthening Family Connections" was a collaboration to understand the challenges of incarcerated parents, their children, and caregivers. Out of those identified challenges, co-designers selected those they connected with and collectively built solutions that addressed them and enabled positive connections for families impacted by incarceration. The collages are visual representations that capture the critical elements and features of the concepts.

In this collaboration, we convened families who have been impacted by incarceration and other stakeholders to understand the conditions, policies, practices, and experiences that disconnect children and families from incarcerated parents. We identified the barriers to building strong family connections and prototyped concepts to strengthen those bonds.
