Preserving a Cinematic Classic
This rare Wizard of Oz one-sheet from the 1970s Australian re-release came to us folded, with visible creases from decades of storage. Using traditional linen backing, we carefully relaxed the paper fibers, reduced fold lines, and mounted the poster using fully reversible, archival materials.
Linen backing allows vintage movie posters to lie flat, frame beautifully, and remain protected for generations — without compromising their originality or value.

Before and after: restoring the reflection of a 1920s engraved mirror.

This engraved architectural mirror dates to the 1920s and was installed above a built-in sideboard in a Chicago-area bungalow. Moisture had penetrated along the edges and through the mounting holes, causing disfiguring discoloration and delamination of the original silvering and protective backing.

Fortunately, the shaped glass and engraved floral decoration remained in good condition.

We carefully removed the deteriorated coatings, thoroughly cleansed the reverse of the glass, applied a new reflective silver layer, and applied a protective coating on the verso.

The treatment restored a clear, even reflection while retaining the original glass, bevels, engraving, mounting holes, and age-appropriate character.

Resilvering made it possible to preserve an architectural element created specifically for this historic interior rather than recreating a replacement.

The Prodigal Son Tending the Swine (1538), a historic engraving by Hans Sebald Beham

This delicate Renaissance print arrived at our studio with foxing, acid burn, and darkening from previous framing. Using museum-quality techniques and archival materials, the print was cleaned, stabilized, and then archivally matted.

A recent project from our studio: the museum-quality framing of Guitare et partition sur guéridon, a pochoir by Pablo Picasso.

Works on paper require a careful balance between preservation and presentation. For this piece, we focused on long-term protection using archival materials, while designing a frame that supports the composition without distracting from it.

Every decision, from the UV filtering glazing, to proportion, reversible mounting, and the profile design, was made to ensure the artwork is both visually resolved and responsibly preserved.

This before-and-after detail highlights the conservation treatment of a Gilded Age gilded frame, focusing on the repair of a cartouche that was partially missing and previously poorly restored.

Treatment included the removal of prior inappropriate repairs, the casting of replacement elements based on the original ornamentation, and subsequent gilding and patination to achieve visual continuity with the surrounding surfaces.
