Iris C. Gutiérrez Berríos is an immigration attorney by vocation. She has been interested and involved in issues of human rights and refugees since 2006. In 2008, when she moved from Puerto Rico to Chicago, she learned about the identities of undocumented youths, their parents and the unfair impact that immigration status has in all aspects of their lives. This caused an awakening in Iris which resulted in her eventually becoming an immigration attorney after graduating from the John Marshall Law School in Chicago, Illinois in 2015. As an attorney, Iris was introduced to concepts of community lawyering and community organizing. These concepts accompany Iris throughout her work and consultations, including client relationships without regard to immigration status. My professional goal is to work from the vantage point of the client to improve prospects long term. Throughout her experiences in nonprofit, Iris has collaborated in the creation and termination of immigration legal services programs. She has been involved in management and development including system development and growth. She has also worked in the capacity building for staff and community members.
